THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 28,1957 THE PHiOff—Southern Bines, North Carolina Page SEVEN c ENTRIES FROM 20 STATES Carolina Duo Captures 4th Annual Carousel; Event Termed Successful Bill McIntyre of Maxton and Ben Goodes of Reidsville defeat ed the Raleigh team of Groyer Dillon and Hubert Scarborough 4 and 3 Sunday to take the championship of the fourth an nual Jaycee sponsored Golf Car ousel. Richard Chapman of Pine- hurst, defending champion, and his partner. Art Rxiffin of Wil son, were defeated in the semi finals. The tournament attracted a field of ' 156 golfers, with about 20 states represented. Many of the players were man and wife teams and many were repeat performers from previous tour naments. Rain, which hsimpered play Saturday, eased up Sunday and except for a few drizzles early that morning, the tourna ment was played in generally good weather. The Jaycees said the tourna ment was the “best ever.” Plans for holding another next year are already being discussed. Many of the players indicated they would return for the imique bargain. McIntyre and Goodes, two of the longest ball hitters ever to play in the Cfirousel, were four up at the end of the morning round. In the afternoon the Ra leigh pair tried to get even but could only halve holes and, though their games picked up somewhat, were five down at the end of 27. Goodes closed out the match on the 33rd hole with a 23 foot putt which gave his team a halve. Final matches were played in the tournament at all three Southern Pines courses. For the losers of the first two days With The Armed Forces Army Prt. Joel G. StanciL son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Stencil, Aberdee'n, recently was asigned to the 585th Signal Company in Germany. Stancil, a radio operator, en tered the Army in March 1957 and received basic training at Fort Jackson, S. C. He arrived in Europe last month. The 22-year-old soldier was graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1953. Army Specialist Second Class Robert G. James, New York City, 4 and 3. Gietchen, lives in Robbins, re cently participated in a heavy weapons firing exercises with members of the 11th Airborne Division’s 504th Infantry near Hohenfels, Germany. Specialist Plinchum' entered the Army in July 1955 and is as signed to Company C of the in fantry. He is a 1953 graduate of Carthage High School. Flinchum is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Flinchum.
