Guard Enlistment Open To Men 17-35,
Can Train 6 Months, Return To Unit
In general, enlistment in the
National Guard is open to men
17-35 years old, providing they
jpuss the necessary physical and
mental qualifications. These re
quirements are the same as for
enlistment in the Regular Army.
The Reserve Forces Act of 1955
requires each qualified male ciV
izen to assume a military service
obligation. Young men without
prior service can satisfy this ob
ligation in the National Guard by
enlisting for six months active
duty and then returning to the
local unit to complete their obli
gation.
Most men released from active
service still have a reserve serv
ice obligation, and these men
must perform! ready reserve duty
for various periods, depending
upon their length of active serv
ice. These men can satisfy their
remaining obligation through
service in the Guard.
The Guard training programs
are the same as Regular Army
programs, and the local unit—
Company D of the 130th Tank
Battalion—is just entering the
“unit training” phase, meaning
that all men of the unit have
completed (or will complete by
this summer) their basic and ad
vanced individual training. Then
the training programs will con
sist of platoon and company tac
tical training. Each nian in the
National Guard receives a full
day’s base pay in his grade for
each training period.
Young men interested in
Guard membership will find it
easy to get full information.
Master Sergeant Ralph B.
Martin is at the armory on Mor-
ganton Road (old Pinehurst road,
across the Morganton Road
(old Pinehurst road, across the
Morganton Road bridge over the
parkway) daily, except Saturday
and Sunday, from 8 a. m. to 5

Mr. Hall landed a 19 pound,
eight ounce jack and brought iri
to the boat an amberijack estima
ted at around 65 pounds which he
released. “I wanted to give some
body else a chance to catch him
again,” said Mr. Hall.
All members of the local party
