(Southern Pines, less than 35 miles away as the crow flies, is considered in that area). Governor Luther Hodges, in making the announcement of the $20 million plant this week, call ed it one of the most important announcements made in the past several years for the state. Con gressman Carl Durham of the joint committee on Atomic En ergy, says the plant will be a “great basic research tool.” And Congressman Paul Kitch- in, of Wadesboro, says it will carry a potential “beyond imag ination.” The test plant, unique in this part of the United States, will draw industrial attention from all over the country. Many business leaders in this county have pre dicted that many of its economic benefits “are bound to rub off on Moore County by way of produc- when the plant is in operation.” The plant is expected to pro vide at least 500 jobs with an annual payroll of more than a million dollars when it begins operation, perhaps within two years. Business leaders are think ing beyond the immediate bene fits of construction jobs, how ever. Research into the implications of atomic energy for peacetime uses is one of the greatest pro jects in the country today. In the future, some experts predict, oil companies will bring their prod ucts to the plant searching for new possible uses. Pharmaceuti cal companies will be there also, searching for new ways to fight diseases with the atom. And metal manufacturers will use the plant as a center of research. It is even conceived that this area will, in the not too distant future, become the center for a vast number of industries, drawn center. And unofficial reports indicate that the plant will be the center for a large number of scientists conducting basic research in oth er fields. According to Gov. Hodges, some 50,000 kilowatts of heat will be produced by the plant unit, second in size among test re actors only to the 175,000 kilo watt facility operated by the Atomic Ener^ Commission in Idaho. Industrial Testing Reac tors, Inc., the firm that will con struct the reactor, has empha sized that it is designed primari ly for use as a materials testing reactor, not as an electrical gen erating facility. For Southern Pines, which sits strategically between the Re search Triangle in the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill area, and the new reactor site, the an nouncement could mean a great deal. Doctors Will be Honored At Church Here Sunday Members of the medical profes sion in this area will be honored Stmday—Medical Day—at the First Baptist Church here, at both morning and evening wor ship services. At the 11 o’clock service the Rev. Maynard Mangum, pastor, will preach on the subject: “The Great Physician.” At the evening service, beginning at 7:30, Thomas Howerton, administrator of Moore Memorial Hospital, will be in charge. A color movie, “The Healing Ministry,” filmed at the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Sa lem, will be shown at that time. The purpose of the services, ac cording to the Rev. Mangum, is to show that physical as weU as spiritual healing is a part of God’s plan. The general public is invited to attend one or both services. In fact, the word ‘'Catholic” means universal. The Episcopal Church is one of the great branches of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. The full name of our church is the Protestant Episcopal Church. It is protestant in that it did away with certain abuses which developed in the church during the middle ages, and to this day it protests the error of what it considers to be unwarranted and unscriptural additions to the ancient faith and subtractions from it. Yet, it remains Catholic. As the Book of Common Prayer says — “because it is universal, holding earnestly to the faith for all time, in all countries and for all people, and is sent to preach the gospel to the whole world.” The Episcopal Church is not “just another denomination.” It is a democratic and consti tutional Catholic Communion — a true part of the historic Catholic Church. More than 45,000,000 Anglicans the world over join in worshipping, each in his own language, accord ing to the Book of Common Prayer. The Episcopal Church, through its Catholic teaching and tradition, may provide for you the sturdy faith you’ve been seeking. Join us in churcl) — today.
