Four Prisoners Given Additional Time For Deserting Working Crews Four misdemeanor prisoners I Carthage. All were quickly ap- who walked away from work crews Tuesday of last week were given additional sentences in Moore Recorder’s Court Monday to be -served a^ the expiration of the terms they are already serv ing. All are at the prison camp near Carthage. Tried before Judge J. Vance Rowe were Floyd Colfield of Lil- lington, L. M. Jackson of Gran ville, Harold David Smith of Charlotte and Billy Lee Wilson of Reidsville. For Colfield and Jackson the escape was their second one and they received six month sen tences; Smith drew four months and Wilson drew- three. Colfield, Jackson and Wilson deserted the work crew near Culdee Church, outside of Pine hurst, while Smith walked off near Bethlehem Church north of Several From This I County Are Recent Recruits In Army Sergeant Paul H. Hawks, the local Army recruiter, announced this week the names of several young men from this area who have recently joined the US Army. Harold W. Williams, Route 3, Carthage selected assignment to the Army’s artillery radar main tenance course at Ft. Sill, Okla. He is a graduate of Pinkney High School and recently completed four years with the Navy. Walter Audry Cameron, Route 2. Cameron, selected a special as signment in the Army. He gradu ated from Benhaven High School in June of 1958 and was employ ed by Watson Specialty Company in Jonesboro Heights before en listing. Ralph A. Anderson, Route 1, Jackson Springs, reenlisted in the Regular Army unassigned. He was employed by Roberts Company in Sanford and was a 13 year veteran of Army service in World War 2 and during the Korean War. Claude Reams, Jr., of 650 E. Mass. Ave. Southern Pines, en listed in the US Army Reserves for six years. He is a 1956 grad uate of Southern Pines High School and attended the Univer sity of Virginia before entering the Army for 24 months of active duty. Sergeant Hawks asks interest ed young men in the Moore County area to see him Thursday at the Southern Pines Post Office from 9 a. m. to noon, and at the Carthage Post Office from 1 p. m. to 4:30 p. m. Calvin Coolidge McKenzie, West End, driving drunk (second offense), unlawful possession Of seal broken whiskey, 90 days on the roads, suspended on payment of $200 and costs, license revoked two years. Grady Scott, public drunk, dis orderly conduct, threats, disturb ing the peace, State accepted plea of guilty to disorderly conduct, judgment continued On payment of costs and damages to window. Lewis Johnson, Jr., Pinehurst, careless and reckless driving, ac cident. In view of defendant be ing only one injured, judgment continued on payment of $25 fine and costs. Walter Morton, West End, un lawful possession of illicit whis key, 60 days on the roads, sus pended on payment of $25 inclu ding costs. Henry King Buie, Jr. Siler City, driving drunk, $100 and costs, license revoked 12 months. George Caviness Cummings, Route 3, Lillington, careless and reckless driving, accident and in jury, judgment continued on pay ment of $25 and costs, also ex penses of any injury sustained by defendant’s passenger. Elmer M. McCrimmon, Camer on, assault and battery, 30 days on roads, suspended on payment of $10 and costs, found not guilty of temporary larceny. Janie McKeithen Scarboro, Vass, Josie McKeithen Bullock and Elijah Junior Bullock, both of Route 3, Carthage, larceny of $74.30. First two defendants found not guilty, Elijah Bullock given three months on the roads, suspended for 24 months on pay ment of $25 and costs, and on condition he repay the money taken from James Walker. He also was placed on good behavior conditions for a two year period. In companion cases, Janie Scar boro was acquitted of a charge of assault with a deadly weapon (bottle) and Josie Bullock was convicted of assault with a dead ly weapon (razor), given 60 day prison sentence, suspended on payment of $100 fine and costs.
