It may also bring to light a practice for which the older man has long been under suspicion, according to Chief Deputy Sheriff H. H. Grimm, of stealing cars at long distances for the purpose of selling parts, while destroying or otherwise disposing of the rest. Grimm and Deputy R. A. Ed wards were assisted by Lee and Harnett County officers in their investigation, Ed^waird Johnson, 44, of Sanford, was picked up by Sanford police and is being held, to answer charges in Lee Superi or Court before being turned over to the Moore County officers. Johnson has remained silent under the accusations but, said Grimm, the other man, Claybourn West, 22, of Bunnlevel, after in tensive interrogation, gave a written statement in which he revealed the practice in which he said he assisted Johnson. The abandoned chassis, found with two car seats ripped out and lying beside it,, provided one, clue. All serial numbers had been cut off—but one. It led to identi fication of the car a^ a Ford Fair- lane stolen in Onslow County Tuesday night. A yellow trailer seen in the vicinity Wednesday was .found to have been rented from a Bonnie Doone concern. The front end of the car—fenders, ra diator, bumper and windshield— were found to have been sold to a Sanford body shop. Grimm said the body shop owner apparently bought the parts lipnocently, and is coopera ting fully with police. , H.9 said that Johnson, an auto mechanic who formerly operated his own garage at Lillington, ap parently followed the practice of finding out certain parts needed by garage or body shops, saying that he had such parts available or could get them, then stole a car to get these specific parts for which he already had a sale. West told police that the parts of the stolen car which weren’t sold, or'left in the woods in Little River, were thrown into the river near Lobelia. Later Sabiston reported that he had insisted they weren’t guilty and would not plead ,to anything, while the boys said they “didn’t feel they were guilty of anything either.” The four, who were without counsel, sat silent as Sgt. Sea- well testified about finding them drinking beer in a Southern Pines restaurant within an hour after receiving a phone call from Vass about the missing car. It had been driven off from a dance pa vilion, and Constable L. F. Woods informed Seawell two men and two girls were thought to be in it. Seawell said that, when ques tioned, the women said they had thought it was the soldiers’ car, while one of the soldiers told him it “belonged to the girls.” 'The police had found the car, property of Robert Wayne Tin- gen of Fuquay-Varina, parked be hind the restaurant.
