She accomplisiied the remarkable feat of majoring in three subjects: Religion, Edu cation and French, while working in the school cafeteria for four years and serving as assistant in the Modern Language Depart ment for a year and a half and completing the work for her de gree in three and a half years. In spite of this rigorous schedule she found time to participate in the College Choral Workshop her Senior year in college and twice made the Dean’s List. Currently Miss King holds a Class “A” Teacher’s Certificate in Bible and French. She will be awarded her degree at the regular ceremony at Wake Forest College in June. Miss King is living in the cot tage provided by the church for that purpose at 270 E. New York Avenue. Organists Called At a fecent business session, the members present unanimous ly adopted recommendations from the Church Music Committee— composed of Ed Willis, acting chairman, Mrs. Paul Jones, Mrs. C. R. Mills, and Mrs. John An drews—that the church call as organist Mrs. T. R. (Martha) THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 1960 Howerton, who has served as in- terimi organist since early Nov ember. She will be primarily re sponsible for accompanying the senior choir at rehearsals and at the morning preaching services; and to play for Tunerals, wed dings and other special occasions. Mrs. Howerton is one of the best-qualified musicians in this area, having received her Bache lor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees at Meredith College, go ing on to earn her Master of Mu sic at the University of Michigan. She has, in addition, studied at the world-famous Juilljard School of Music in New York City and since that time has had much practical experience in church music. 'The. committee further recom mended that Miss Dianne Fields, talented senior high school stu dent and member of the Baptist Church, be invited to become as sociate organist, playing for the evening preaching services and working with the music director arid the pastor in planning special music features for these services. Miss Fields is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Fields of Southern Pines. She has been studying un der Mrs. C. R. Mills for some time and has been playing the orgrn .'or the church from time to time. Both Miss King and Mrs. How erton have accepted and are at work in their new positions. Chappell; another I capable senior high school stu dent, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Chappell of Southern Pines, to serve as pianist for the Fel lowship of Prayer on Wednesday | evenings.
