Guests included his brother, Ronnie, Su san and Sharon Scarborough, Amy Clark, Gardner Sheffield,' Houston Black, Jr., Georgia Mae Simpson, Sylvia Finch, Herbie and Alex Cameron, and Don and Cathy Lou Caudle. After playing games in the backyard, the youngsters enjoyed a supper of hot dogs, ice crearh and cake. Harriss Family Tours South and Central States Mr. and Mrs. Berrett Harriss and their daughters, Jo Anne, Katherine and Judy, have just re turned from a two weeks’ motor trip through the south and mid west. They CEimped out in the Blue Ridge mountains, visited the ante-bellum mansions in Natchez Miss., toured Dixieland and the Frence Quarter in New Orleans, La., stopped off at Hot Springs, Ark., and returned home after a visit to Pensacola, Fla. and some deep-sea fishing along the Gulf of Mexico. Charla Marcum to Appear on TV Program July 12 Charla Anne Marcum, “Miss Sanford” and a dozen other aspi rants for the* “Miss North Caro lina” title to be conferred during the contest July 19-24 in Char lotte, will appear on the “Mat inee” television program over Channel 2, Greensboro at 3 p.m. July 12. The live telecast on the 12th, which will consist of a parade of the girls followed by personal in terviews, will be taped to be re shown on the July 14th “Matinee” program. . Miss Marcum went to Troy Sat urday for a fireworks display and on Monday, she and seven other local contestants joined “Miss North Carolina,” Judy Klipfel, and “Miss America” in Siler City for Independence Day celebrations including a parade and rodeo. Attend National Kiwanis Meeting Mr. and Mrs. John Ponzer and their daughters, Grace and Janet, of Southern Pines and Mr. and Mis. T. Roy Phillips of Carthage, have just returned from a visit to Florida. Mr. Ponzer and Mr. Phil lips were delegates from the Sandhills Kiwanis Club of Moore Couniy at the Kiwanis National convention held the last week of June in Miami’s Convention Hall. The Carolin,a District delegates maintained headquarters at the Cadillac Hotel. En route to Miami, the Ponzers stopped off at St. Augustine and other points of interest on the east coast. Returning home via the west coast, they had a visit with Mr. and Mrs. James Mann and their two daughters (Jimmy w'as former sports editor of Golf World) in St. Petersburg. Celebrates 97th Birthday June 30 Mrs. Vivian Shermah celebra ted her 97th birthday last Thurs day, June 30, at the Pinehurst Convalescent Home. After 51 years of teaching an elementary grade at the former Barnforth School in Danbury, Conn., Mrs. Sherman retired in the 1920’s and came to Pinebluff, where she and her sisters pur chased a home. Following the death of her sisters, Mrs. Sher man moved into Mrs. Dora Fletcher’s home six years ago. In recognition of her birthday, •she received flowers from her classes of 1910, 1911 and 1912, and enjoyed a birthday cake with candles at the Convalescent Home, where she has been living for a year as she was unable to continue keeping house. ocal Golfers Among Winners At Pinehurst Sixty-four players turned out Monday to participate in the July 4th mixed better ball of pair tournament at the Pinehurst Country Club, in which members of the men’s Morco Club were in vited guests of the Sandhills Sum mer Club. The winping team with a net 63, wqs that of Mrs. J. A. Rug- gles and J. Hubert McCaskill. Miss Katherine Sledge and Dr. F. C. Sandzen tied for second with Mr. and Mrs. William J. Burke, both teams scoring net 64’s, and tied for third place with net 65’s were Mrs. Claude E. Reams and W. Lamont Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis C. Burwell, Jr. Following the tournament, players and their families gath ered on the Country Club terrace for a picnic supper. The regular weekly tournament of the Sandhills Summer Club was played Tuesday, nine holes of medal play with 25 entrants. Mrs. Claude E. Reams’ net 35 won first prize with Mrs. E. Nolley Jackson scoring 37 for a second place win. Next Tuesday’s tourney will be a best six out of each nine hole event. County Girls’ 4-H Winners Judy Stanley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Stanley, Jr., of Route' 2, Carthage and a member of the Cameron Senior 4-H Club, placed in the top six division in the District 4-H Dress Revue. She will compete in the State Dress Revue in Raleigh during 4-H Club Week, July 25-29. Judy won in the County Revue this spring with her jilaid suit of cotton and dacron with a match ing solid cotton blouse. For her accessories she chose black shoes and bag and a blue hat matchihg the plaid of the suit. Jane Lynch has been named first place county winner in the girls’ division with her 4-H wild life project. The daughter of Mrs. H. B. Lynch of Route 1, Cameron, Jane has done outstanding work in public speaking and girls’ elec tric demonstrations. She is a member of the Carthage Senior 4H Club. Carolyn Kidd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kidd of High- falls, was runner-up in the Girls’ Wildlife project. Both girls had outstanding records. Thrower, DOGWOOD GROVE NO. 253 OBSERVES SEVENTH BIRTHDAY WITH PICNIC ^ Members and friends of Dog wood Grove No. 253 of the Su preme Forest Woodmen Circle and Pine Camp of the Woodmen of the World ' gathered in the Woodmen hall last Tuesday night for a family picnic supper with an evening of fun and fellowship folk'V/ing the supper. The get-together served a dual purpose. Dogwood Grove was cel- lebrating its seventh birthday, also June 4 marked the 30th anni versary of the Woodmen Circle Home in Sherman, Texas. A poster displaying outstand ing facts about the Home was on display and Miss Mary Scott Newton gave the history and pur pose of the founding of the Honie. This Home is for Woodmen Cir cle members and orphaned chil dren of members. In its 30 years of existence over 200 adults and children have been cared for. At present there are approximately 50 members in the Home. In celebration of the Circle’s Mrs. Cora Andrews, Miss Mary T. Bailey, Dempsey Bailey, Sue Norton, Mrs. D. E. Bailey, Mrs. Raywill Pearce, Miss Barbara Pearce, Mrs. Eugene Norton, Eugene Norton, and twins Judy and Gene Norton.
