McKenzie Fred L. McKenzie Wins Commission In Officer School Fred L. McKenzie, a member of the Moore County National Guard unit, was recently appoint ed a second lieutenant in the North Carolina National Guard, after completing the six-month regular Officer Candidate Course at Fort Benning, Ga. Lt. McKenzie, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Ivey McKenzie of Pinehurst, is a graduate of the Pinehurst High School. Enlisting as a private in the National Guard In 1951, Lt. McKenzie has served with the local unit continuously, .since that time, except for two yoais of active service with the f;2nd Airborne Division. He is now assigned as Platoon Leader, Company D, 2nd Medium Tank Battalion, 196th Armor, stationed at Southern Pines. Lt. McKenzie lives in Lakeview and is a partner in the Resort Piumbing and Heating Company in Southern Pines. He and nis wife, the former Betty Black, have three sons, Dale, 7; Lamont, 6; and Gary, 4. I , ' I Bids Asked for Aberdeen PO The Aberdeen postmaster, Mrs. Evelyn Garrison, said today she has been advised by the office of Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield that the Post Office Department is now asking for bids to build and lease to the De partment the new post office for Aberdeen. Closing date for the bids is August 1. “This proposed new building,” Postmaster Garrison said, Xwill replace existing facilities'* located on the west side of . Sycamore Street. ' “Specifications call for a struc ture containing approximately 3,374 square feet with an outside loading platform and adequate space for parking and truck man euvering.”/ Postmas'ter Garrison said she has been advised that the Post Office Department will enter into lease agreement with the suc- cessfuV bidder which will run for ten years with two five-year re newal options. By ANN J. McNEILL American Home Dept. The American Home Depart- metn of the Aberdeen Woman’s Club held its June meeting with Mrs. J. G. Farrell with nine mem bers and one guest, Mrs. D. L. Walker, present. The chairman, Mrs. Lewis Harrington, presided over the business session. Mrs. Farrell presented an interesting program on the gardens at the National Cathedral in Washing ton, D. C. The hostess served ice cream, cookies, and iced tea dur ing the social hour. Aberdeen Gardenetles Mrs. R. D. Spear, Jr. was hos tess to members of the Aberdeen Gardenettes on Tuesday evening, June 28, at her home here. During the business session, the follow ing slate was voted upon unan imously for officers for the com ing year: Mrs. Charles Shields, president; Mrs. Ed Graham, vice president; Mrs. Spear, secretary; Mrs. Bob Samuels, treasurer; and Mrs. Jim Long, historian. Mrs. Vann Clark, program chairman for the evening, pre sented Mrs. Bob Farrell, president of the Round Robin Garden Club, who conducted a question and answer period on gardening and answered in helpful ways the I many questions raised by the , group. A number of interesting floral arrangements bad been brought by members and Mrs. Shield s daisies won first place with Mrs. Frank McNeill’s arrangement placing second. Delightful refreshments were served during the social hour by the hostess. New Son The Rev. and Mrs. R. S. Bare- field of Winston-Salem announce the arrival of a son on June 25. The baby weighed nine pounds, 15 ounces and has been given the name, Robert Carter. Baby Daughter Mr. and Mrs. David Meredith of Guilford College, announce the arrival of a baby daughter on June 25. The baby weighed five pounds, 14 ounces. Mrs. Meredith is the former Miss Martha Lou Guion, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C. L. Guion of Aberdeen. Attend Camp Nine Pioneers • from Bethesda Presbyterian Church attended camp at Camp Monroe last week: Helen Odom, Ann Muse, Court ney Bowen, Wes Caviness, Billy McKeithan, Johnny Barks, Victor Grove, and Sam Bell. Two other Pioneers, Johhriy Burns and Gene Troutman had attended the week previous. Eastern Star School The Twelfth District School of Instruction, The Order of the Eastern Star, was held in Rowell Chapter 78, Hamlet, N. C., on Wednesday, June 29. Attending from the Aberdeen chapter were: Misses Hazel and . Elizabeth Thompson, Mrs. Agnes Wylie, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hooper, Mrs. Julian Parks, Mrs. H. J. Edge, Mrs. E. T. Davidson, and Miss Edna Maurer. Briefs Miss Stuart Harmon is a patient at Moore Memorial Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Frye and family and Lt. and Mrs. J. W. Frye, Jr. are vacationing at Fish erman’s Cove, Chincotague Island, Va. Mr. and Mrs. A1 Cruce and family are vacationing in Georgia this week where they will visit Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Cruce and sons in Marietta and where they will also attend the Cruce reunion. Miss Shirley Styers is spending this week at Camp Rainbow in western North Carolina. Mrs. Louise Styers and Mr. and Mrs. Jay Watson accompanied her and spent the weekend in the moun tains. Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Townsend and sons of Laurinburg spent Sunday with Mrs. C. C. Bethune. Mrs. Grace Troutman is visiting her son, Dr. Belk Troutman and family in Grifton. Mrs. Anne Mischke and daugh ter, Karen, Mrs. Catherine Burns, and Nancy Bridgers visited the Indian Mounds near Mt. Gilead Sunday afternoon. Mrs. C. H. Storey, Mrs. W. A. Blue, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Crane of Fayetteville, spent last week at Montreat. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Smith and family of Houston, Texas, visited old friends in Aberdeen on Thurs day. They are visiting his sisters, Mrs. Vann Tally and Mrs. Ralph Chapman in Sanford. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Smith of Winston-Salem and Joe Smith were weekend visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Smith and Mrs. Grace Sloan. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Russell are spending the week at Windy Point. They were joined for the Fourth of July weekend by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wicker and fam,ily. Other at Windy Point this week are Mrs. W. D. Caviness and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wooten and daugh ters. Miss Pearl McFarland spent the weekend in Raleigh. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Crowder visited relatives in Clarksville, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Hargett re turned Wednesday following sev eral days with relatives at Lake Waccamaw. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Whittington of Kannapolis spent the weekend with their daughter and son-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Poole and children. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Thompson and children of New York City arrived Monday for a visit with his mother, Mrs. I. A. Thompson and other relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. George Pappen- dick and Mary Nita spent the weekend in Roanoke Rapids with Mr. Pappendick’s parents. Young Dusty Pappendick returned home with them following a week at Nag’s Head with his grand par ents. Vacationing at Myrtle Beach Wednesday through Saturday of this week are Mrs. Catherine Burns and sons, Johnny and Rob ert, Miss Dorothy McNeill, Mrs. Vann Clark, Miss Faye Matthews, and Johnny qnd Jean Robertson of Pembroke. Mr. and Mrs. Billy Matthews and daughter of Lawton, Okla. were called home last week due to the death of Mr. Matthews’ father. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas G. Poin dexter, Jr., and son, Thomas G., Ill of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, South America spent some time recently with his mother, Mrs. T. G. Poindexter. Mr. and Mrs. Poindexter spent last week in New York City while young Mas ter Poindexter remained with his grandmother here. Mrs. W. U.
