Dr. Hollister Is
Named to Office in
Surgical Society
Dr. William F. Hollister of Mid
land Road was elected vice presi
dent of the North Carolina Surgi
cal Society during a meeting of
the Society at Linville, Thursday
through Sunday.
The meeting was attended by
Dr. and Mrs. Hollister and Dr. and
Mrs. Charles Phillips of Southern
Pines.
Dr. Hollister is a past president
of the North Carolina Chapter of
the American College of Sur
geons.
Mrs. Cole WUl Attend
Public Welfare Session
Mrs. Walter B. Cole, superinten
dent of the Moore County Board
of Public Welfare, will attend a
three-day workshop on “Public
Welfare Management” in Chapel
Hill October 5-7 at the Institute
of Government.
Dr. Ellen Winston, commission
er of public welfare, stated that
tnis is the second annual work
shop in administrative techniques
for superintendents of public
welfare.
U. S. turkey prices this fall will
average one to two cents below
prices received during the same
period in 1959.

Broadway Given 2-Year Suspended
Sentence in Labor Day Shooting Case
Forrest Broadway, 61-year-old
West Southern Pines resident,
was given a two-year suspended
prison term by Judge W. Harry
Fullenwider in Southern Pines
Recorder’s Court last week. He
also was taxed with the costs on a
gambling count.
Broadway was charged with as
sault with a deadly weapon with
intent to kill in the Labor Day
shooting of William Thomas
(Tommy) Wade, also of West
Southern Pines.
The shooting followed what po
lice described as a drinking bout
and gambling session. Wade was
shot in the back in the kitchen of
hia home.
Broadway’s two-year sentence
was suspended for four years on
payment of the costs and the doc
tor and hospital bills incurred by
Wade. Also a condition of the sus
pended sentence was that he not
be convicted of a similar offense
for four years and he was placed
under supervision of the proba
tion officer for two years.
Wade, now recovered, paid the
costs in the same court session
last week on a gambling charge
and appealed to Superior Court
on a conviction of possession of
and selling non-taxpaid liquor.
Wade’s sentence on the liquor
charge was one year on the roads
suspended for two years on pay
ment of the costs and on condition
that he not be convicted of a simi
lar offense in two years. He als'o
was placed under supervision of
the probation officer. Bond for his
appeal was set at $100.
Other cases heard last week (if
defendant is from Southern Pines,
no address is listed);
Donald Smith, assault, non suit;
John D. Graham, Route 1, Aber
deen, careless and reckless driv
ing, no valid operator’s permit,
$25 and costs; Preston O. Ragan,
Chapel Hill, speeding 45 in 35
zone, $10 and costs; Ralph Junior
McCoy, Manly, possession of seal-
broken whiskey, $10 and costs;
Lreorge Godwin, possession of
whiskey for purpose of sale, 12
months on roads, suspended five
years on payment of $200 and
costs, not to be covicted of simi
lar offense in five years; Edward
C. Patterson, Jr., Route 2, Vass, 23
years old, carnal knowledge of fe
male under 16, not guilty plea en
tered, probable cause found, de
fendant to be held for grand jury,
bond set at $1,000; same defend
ant, paternity of illegitimate
child, continued until after birth
of child.
Jefferson L. Bullens, Route 2,
Vass, speeding 45 in 35 zone, car
rying concealed weapon (pistol),
$10 and costs; Joe Leonard Wat
son, Sanford, speeding 75 in 60
zone, $15 and costs; John Wayne
McNeill, Cameron, speeding 72 in
<30 zone, $12 and costs; Norman M.
Calcutt, speeding, improper

Three defendants paid $10 and
costs on public drunk charges, in
separate cases; Anthony Morton,
Jr., Fort Bragg; Robert A. Vock-
er. Fort Bragg; and Luther L.
Harrington, Jackson Hamlet.
Charged with gambling and
using vije and profane language,
four defendants were each sen
tenced to one month on the roads,
suspended for 12 months on pay
ment of $10 and costs, each not to
be convicted of similar offense in
2 months. They were Melvin
Stuckey, Phillip G. McLellan,
Curtis L. Wade and Mackie Lee
Stubbs.
Nol pros with leave was taken
in the case charging Bobby Lee
Tew, 23, with fornication and
adultery. The same defendant,
.charged with assault on a female,
was also found guilty of engaging
m an affray and was sentenced
to one month, suspended for 12
months on payment of the costs
and on condition he not go on the
premises of the complainant, his
wife, Mrs. Swaine Coleen Tew
without written invitation and
also that he not telephone, molest
or threaten her nor be found in
the company of the complainant.
The same sentence and condi
tions were handed down in the
case of Mrs. Ina Mae Tew, moth
er of Bobby Lee Tew, who was
charged by Mrs. Swaine Coleen
Tew with assault on female.

parents live at 260 N. Ashe St., is
attending The Army War College
at Carlisle Barracks, Pa. The
lO-month course is scheduled to
be completed in June, 1961. The
Army’s senior school prepares se
lected officers for future assign
ments to top staff and command
positions in the Armed Forces of
the U. S. and other key govern
ment positions. Colonel Sitterson
entered the Army in 1942 and was
last stationed in Germany. The
colonel is a 1937 graduate of
Southern Pines High School. He
attended North Carolina State
College. Colonel Sitterson is a
1942 graduate of the U. S. Mili
tary Academy, West Point, N. Y.,
and a 1953 graduate of George
town University. Washington, D.C.
