(Humphrey photo) WEST END NEWS By SALLIE AUMAN Prize Winners West End is always proud of its school but never more so than Saturday when the- seventh graders won three out of the pos sible eight places in the North Central District Science Fair at N. C. State College, which in cludes 16 counties. Vernon Sutphin won first place in the junior physical divi sion with his project on the “Ef fect of Insulation on Building Materials.” Also in the junior physical. Parks Blake and Don ald Thomas won third place in “Crystallogi'aphy.” In the biolog ical division, Jesse Kimball and William Johnson received a cer tificate of merit, fourth place, with their experiment “The Arti ficial Hibernation of the Frog.” Kay Brown and Judy Hartsell re ceived a certificate of merit with their project, “Reproduction and Experiments with Plants.” Accompanying the contestartts were their teacher, Mrs. Lena Ladu, Mrs. W. A. Johnson, Jr. and Mrs. Lee Sutphin. Principal R. P. Johnson also attended the fair and declared he knew the children would win because he had observed their excellent work during the year. Others at the fair were Mrs. North Lewis with Rick and Chuck and Douglas Tuttle and Richard Wilson. To us in West End it is almost unbelievable that this small school could do so well in competition with city schools and the larger schools in the district. Present Play Members of the senior class gave an excellent presentation of “The Rainbow Girl” at the school Friday evening to a capacity fill ed auditorium. In behalf of the class, Jimmy Melton expressed appreciation to the audience and to the firms who advertised on the programs. Miss Bert Mc- Crummen was presented a gift in appreciation of her untiring ef forts in behalf of the play by class president, Beverly Vest. Immediately following the pro gram, Mrs. John Best and Mrs. Clyde Auman honored the seniors, their' parents, the class mascots, and the faculty at a re ception in the home economics rooms. Miss McCrummen received with the members of the cast Judy Upole, Julia Hanner, Nancy Green, Juanita Best, Janice Clark, Brenda Richardson, Nancy Auman, Wayne Carter, Rodney Smith, Gary Rushing, and Roy Williams, Jr. Assisting the hostesses in serv ing were Angelina VonCanon, Lula Kennedy, Brenda Williams, and Nancy Martin. Conducts Worship Service 'The Senior High Fellowship was in charge of the worship ser vice at the family night supper Sunday at the Presbyterian Church. Serving as hostesses for the get-together were Miss Cor.a Donaldson, Mrs. Roy Carter and Mrs. Leslie Gordon. At NCEA Meeting Attending the meeting of the North Carolina Education Asso ciation in Asheville Thursday through Saturday were Mrs. Claude Thomas and Miss Treva Auman. They were both dele gates from the Moore Units of the NCEA and the Classroom Teachers. They stopped for a visit at Davidson College with George, Watts and Bobby Au man. Fire Department Prompt The Clyde Auman family awakened about 12 o’clock Satur day night to find their home fill ed with smoke. Unable to find the source, they called the fire number. It could hardly have been more than five minutes be fore the fire truck and the fire men were at the scene, two miles from the fire station. On investi gation, it was discovered the motor in the dishwasher nad burned and no further damage was done. This community ap preciates the volunteer depart ment which is doing such an ex cellent job. Study Course The Rev. W. H. Brown present ed a study course on the Basic Christian Beliefs to the Metho dist Women on Sunday evening Mrs. A. J. Hanner presided at the meeting and was hostess to a social hour. Linda Williams serv ed as pianist. ; Personals Dr. and Mrs. R. B. Davis and Miss Bessie Davis of Greensboro were Wednesday guests of Mrs. M. J. Davis. Mrs. Frank I^on of Oxford was the guest of Misses Blahche and Alberta Monroe because of the illness and death of her sis ter, Mrs. Roland Gooch at Moore Memorial Hospital. A boy was born last week to Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Davis at Charlotte Hospital. Mrs. Davis is the former Miss Nancy Caviness and she was a patient of Sherrie Upole. Mr, and Mrs. Sam Poole with Ley of Chapel Hill spent the weekend with the Hawley Pooles and attended the Steeplechase Saturday afternoon. Mrs, Jennie Teeter visited the Charlie Kerr family in Charlotte, for the weekend and they all vis ited relatives in Clover, S. C., on Sunday. Mrs. Teeter was a pa tient Monday overnight at Moore Memorial Hospital. Welcome home to Mrs. R. B. Donaldson, who spent the winter! months with her sisters in Char lotte. Also home are Jeannie and Rupert Donaldson, who spent the winter with the Rev. and Mrs Bud Ellington in Albemarle. Karen Farmer is home for spring holidays from Flora Mac donald College. Sally, Clail and Blake Lewis returned to High Point Monday after visiting their grandmother, Mrs. R. B. Lewis. The children went home to greet their new sister, Donna Alice. Mr. and Mrs. Z. B. Conrad, Jr. visited the Alton Munns in Rich field last Sunday and, to add to the pleasure of the visit, the Bob Youngbloods of Charlotte were also calling on the Munns. Mrs. E. R. Outland was a Sat urday overnight guest of Miss Ethel McDuffie in Candor. Sat urday dinner guests of Mrs. Out- land were Mrs. Wesley Thomas of Carthage and Mrs. John Hen derson of Cameron. Weekend guest of Kathy Cole was Gary Garrison of Pinehurst. Mrs. Minnie Thompson is vis iting the Douglas Clark family in Lumberton. Among the young people here for the weekend were Cassie Gib son, Sherrie Upole and Clifton Munn. Mrs. M. C. McDonald and Mr and Mrs. Allan McDonald attend ed the funeral services for David McDonald in Raeford Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Annie Macy Graham has returned to Fayetteville after spending some time at her home here. Registration Now Open for Fishing Course Registrations for the 10th an nual Sport Fishing short course are arriving daily at the College Extension Division of North Carolina State College. A group of 30 students from eight states and the District of Columbia already has been ac cepted. The course will be held June 11-16 at Nags Head on the outer banks of North Carolina. This year’s program will con sist of lectures and demonstra tions on all kinds of fishing. Highlighting the school will be a Gulf Stream trip, fresh water fishing, off-shore trolling, pier fishing, and surf casting. Registration is limited to the first 75 applicaftts.
