Vardell, Jr., will present a program of piano music for the public at 8:30 on Friday evening, October 6, in the Liberal Arts Auditorium at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Laurinburg. Dr. Vardell, dean of the Conserv atory at St. Andrews, will play numbers by Bach, Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin. Teenage offenders figured prominently in cases on the dock et of Moore County Recorder’s Court Monday—contrasting with one 80-year-old defendant who drew a suspended six months sen tence for having illicit whiskey for sale. Most serious charge against the teenagers was a second offense of drunken driving for Raymond Brown, 18, of Route 2, Carthage, who was also charged with driv ing withofit operator’s license after his license had been revok ed and during the period of revo cation. Brown was sentenced to three months on the roads, with sentence suspended on payment of $200 fine and costs and his operator’s license to be revoked for an additional two-year period. For driving without operator’s license, David Phillips, 16, of Carthage was ordered to pay $25 'the "prohTwtion“Wws to include the costs or serve 30 days on the roads. (Both Brown and Phillips were arresfed later this week on sepa rate larceny charges—see another story in today’s Pilot). Woodrow Eldridge, 19, of Car thage, was charged with careless and reckless driving causing an accident with personal injury. He Two other teenagers, Grady Monroe Wilson of Robbins and Jerry Davis Wilson of Bear Creek were also charged with careless and reckless driving. However, Judge Rowe found them not guilty of this charge but guilty of speeding in excess of 50 miles per hour in a 45-mile zone and fined them $10 each, with each also paying court costs. Joe Bennett, 80, of Carthage, was at the other end of the age scale from the young offenders. Charged with possession of illicit whiskey for sale (the State’s ex hibit included 10 half-gallon jars), he was first sentenced to 90 days in jail, ‘‘to do such work as he is able to do in and around the jail,” but the sentence was changed to six months in prison camp or jail, suspended for two years on pay ment of $150 fine and costs and on condition that he not violate for two years. Other cases h^arri Monday (wifVi iho e::t.cpuon of the Thom i.lcKenzie case involving larceny of goods from the former South ern Pines Cottages property, which is reported in a separate story) were: Catherine Parker Denning, Car with property damage, possession of taxpaid liquor, judgment con tinued on payment of $100 fine and costs and payment of dam ages to auto of Ruth Muse, driv er’s license to be revoked for 12 months; Paul Blue Grady, Car thage, drunken driving, 60 days on roads, suspended on payment of $100 fine and costs, op.erator’s .license to be revoked for 12 months; Cecil Hilton Rowell, Lakeview, driving without oper ator’s license, $15 and costs, not to drive until he obtains proper license; Grover Cornelius Rowell, Robbins, careless and reckless driving, no operator’s license, 30 days on roads, suspended on pay ment of $25 to include the costs (nobody injured except defendant and no property damage). John Robert Andrews, South ern Pines, following another auto too closely, found guilty of opera ting a motor vehicle at a speed excessive under the facts and cir cumstances existing at time and place, not guilty of following an other car top closely, judgment continued on payment of costs; Gene E. Fowler, Fayetteville, es caping from prison, three months on roads, to begin at expiration of sentence now being served. Butler to Speak To Wildlife Club Howard N.
