(Humphrey photo) Benjamin Lynch Succumbs at 89 Benjamin P. Lynch, 89, of Southern Pines died Thursday of last week. Rosary services were held at Powell Funeral Home Sunday and requiem mass was offered Monday at 10 a. m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church by the pastor, the Rev. Francis M. Smith. Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery. A native of Albany, N. Y., he was an executive with the New York Central railway, moving to Southern Pines in 1956 following his retirement. Fifteen prizes in five age groups will be offered to boys six through 10 years of age in the Punt, Pass and Kick football competition to be staged at Mem orial Field at 2 p. m. Saturday. There will be first prizes of football uniforms, second prizes oL warm-up jackets and third prizes of footballs for boys in each of the age groups—six, seven, eight, nine and 10 years old. Skill in punting, passing and place-kicking will be tested. Tom Ruggles, Joe Kimball and Joel Stutts were named this week as judges for the contests. John W. Williams, high school athletic coach is the director of the competition. The public is invited. The con tests are part of a nation-wide program sponsored by the Ford Division of the Ford Motor Com pany, in cooperation with the National Boot ball League and sponsored locally by Jackson Motors. Boys may register for the contests up to noon Saturday at Jackson Motors on Old No. 1 highway, south. South St. Aberdeen Don Smith of Southern Pines faced trial in Moore County Re corders Court Monday for engag ing in electrical work without a license, probably the first time such an offense had come up in that court. ' ' Judgment was continued for Smith on payment of $25 and costs, and on condition he re imburse his customer. Wilbert McDonald, for money McDonald had to pay another electrician to fix the wiring so it would pass inspection. The defendant was also ordered not to engage in electrical contracting till he first obtains the proper and required license. Fred Shields McDuffie of Rob bins, charged with drunken driv ing, was found not guilty, but was convicted instead on an amended warrant on the charge of driving a car with a loud and defective muffler. Judgment was continued for him, on payment of costs. Robert Williams of Sanford was acquitted on a charge of al lowing livestock—to wit, goats— to run at large and destroy crops. In another unusual situation, Rochelle Cole, Negro, of Carth age, who had twice failed to ap pear when called as a prosecu ting witness in an assault case, said he had had no subpoena nor any other notice he was suppos ed to be in court. The three de fendants were dismissed last week on a nol pros with leave when Cole was absent for th: AT JACKSON SPRINGS Pastor Speaks to Ruritan Meeting; Supper Planned The Rev. Timothy R. Hickey, pastor of Marcus and Pleasant Hill Methodist Churches, was the speaker for the annual Ladies Night meeting of the Jackson Springs Ruritan Club last week, discussing the rural church and the part it plays in a community. Special music was furnished by Gayle and Dayle Thomas during the meal which was served by the Women of Jackson Springs Presbyterian Church. The ladies were welcomed by Robert Henderson; response was given by Mrs. Kimes Blake.
