Has Dual Role in Traveling Show
When Pat Clark of West End
first went to the North Carolina
State Fair at Raleigh as a small
school girl and marvelled at the
spectacular mile-long midway of
James E. Strates, she never
dreamed that in a few years she
would return to the fair as the
world’s only elephant - riding
private secretary.
A year ago Pat came to Raleigh
trying to find a secretarial job
with the state. Unsuccessful in
her attempts, she was about to
return to West End when one of
the employment agencies called
and asked if she would like to
work for James E. Strates show
for a week as a secretary. She ac
cepted and went to the fair
ground to see Strates.
After a day-long search, she
finally found Strates among his
maze of wagons, trucks and
stands. Pat was hired for the
week. lAt the end of that week
she was asked if she would be

sented, finished out the rest of
the season and finally joined
Strates organization full-time.
When the show went on the
road once again, Strates suddenly
found himself without a girl to
ride his massive elephants and
could not locate one. One evening
Pat was joking with Strates, say"
ing that she would ride the ele
phants and the next morning
found that he had taken her
seriously and had arr2mged for
her to start practicing with the
elephants.
In time, Pat mastered the rou
tine and for the first time rode
the elephants before the public

When asked how her mother,
Mrs. E. P. Hinson of West End,
reacted to her joining the Strates
show, she said that her mother
was somewhat reluctant until she
met Mr. and Mrs. Strates and
found out what kind of people
they were. After that, Pat said,
her mother had no fears.
Pat now makes her home in
a railroad car suite which adjoins
Strates’s private car and only gets

Fred Davis, 47, of Robbins, died
Saturday morning in Moore Mem
orial Hospital at Pinehurst. Fun
eral services were held Monday
at 2;30 p. m. at the Robbins Pil
grim Church, conducted by the
Rev. H. R. Helms, assisted by the
Rev. G. E. Laws and the Rev. J.
A. Price. Burial was in the Pine
Rest Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Hilda Garner Davis; four daugh
