Mrs. Currie and her guests laid by civic-minded citizens many years ago which have given Southern Pines its unique charac ter and charm. Without the in terest of these unselfish citizens who worked for benefits to be realized only in the future, this community would be far less at tractive and thriving today, the mayor said. He told the student body assembled in the school auditorium, “It is the respons- iblity of your generation to carry on and improve the good work which has been done before, in your town, your State and in the world.” He invested as officers four young people elected by the seventh and eighth graders to head their newly organized Civics Club, an extension of their social studies courses. These were Sandra Smithson, president; Dennis pougherty, vice-president; Audrey Owens, secretary, and Sandra Craig, treasurer. All are members of the eighth grade except Audrey Owens, who is in the seventh. The president and vice-presi dent made original addresses on the purposes and activities of the club. Said President Smithson, “The purpose is to train our members in citizenship and leadership in their community, and to keep them well informed of happen ings not only in the community but all over America. We want to help things start to happen— good things for our community, so that it will be a little bit better because we were here.” attended worship service Sunday at Bensalem Church. Mrs. Lena Sullivan is recuperating nicely at Moore Memorial Hospital and is expecting to come home this week. Attending the state fair in Ra^ leigh last week were Mr. and Mrs. Mike Lambeth with Joyce, Joe, Jim, Sharon Blue and Becky and Janet Markham. At the dinner dance Saturday evening at the Carolina Country Club in Raleigh the club members “roared back to the ’20’s.” Mrs. William Ross enlisted the aid of her mother-in-law, Mrs. George Ross, who sent her an authentic dress of that period to wear. Betty Fishel was home for the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Fishel. Betty has been elected associate editor of the school paper published by the Ashemore Business College of Thomasville. She is also a typist, working afternoons, for the First Baptist Church in Thomasville. Vice-President Dougherty ex plained that the activities would include projects “for your bene fit, and our training; to give our school a good spirit, and to help us grow up as good citizens. “He said the club is part of a nation wide movement in parochial schools based on the theme of “The Family,” for “ the family that works and prays together stays together.” The children entered in a pro cession headed by Michael Buch holz as bearer of the American flag. Ransdell, Jr., announced today that the Moore County Farm Bureau annual ban quet will be held at the Carthage school cafeteria Saturday night November 4. B. C. Mangum, presi dent of North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation, will be the principal speaker. Ransdell said, “I surely hope that all members and their wives (farmers and associates) will hear this outstanding farm leader and enjoy the free chicken barbecue. Children of members are welcome at 75 cents each.
