^ her cousins, Mrs. Janie Paschal
and Russell McDonald of High
Point. Mrs. Currie and her guests
laid by civic-minded citizens
many years ago which have given
Southern Pines its unique charac
ter and charm. Without the in
terest of these unselfish citizens
who worked for benefits to be
realized only in the future, this
community would be far less at
tractive and thriving today, the
mayor said. He told the student
body assembled in the school
auditorium, “It is the respons-
iblity of your generation to carry
on and improve the good work
which has been done before, in
your town, your State and in the
world.”
He invested as officers four
young people elected by the
seventh and eighth graders to
head their newly organized
Civics Club, an extension of their
social studies courses.
These were Sandra Smithson,

eighth grade except Audrey
Owens, who is in the seventh.
The president and vice-presi
dent made original addresses on
the purposes and activities of the
club.
Said President Smithson, “The
purpose is to train our members
in citizenship and leadership in
their community, and to keep
them well informed of happen
ings not only in the community
but all over America. We want
to help things start to happen—
good things for our community,
so that it will be a little bit better
because we were here.”

and Janet Markham.
At the dinner dance Saturday
evening at the Carolina Country

Ross, who sent her an authentic
dress of that period to wear.

weekend with her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. George Fishel. Betty
has been elected associate editor
of the school paper published by
the Ashemore Business College of
Thomasville. She is also a typist,

Baptist Church in Thomasville.
Vice-President Dougherty ex
plained that the activities would
include projects “for your bene
fit, and our training; to give our
school a good spirit, and to help
us grow up as good citizens. “He
said the club is part of a nation
wide movement in parochial
schools based on the theme of
“The Family,” for “ the family
that works and prays together
stays together.”
The children entered in a pro
cession headed by Michael Buch
holz as bearer of the American
flag. Sister Cartherine Leonard,
principal, introduced Mayor Rug
gles.

Aniiual Banquet of
Farm Bureau Set
For November 4
President S. R. Ransdell, Jr.,
announced today that the Moore
County Farm Bureau annual ban
quet will be held at the Carthage
school cafeteria Saturday night
November 4. B. C. Mangum, presi
dent of North Carolina Farm
Bureau Federation, will be the
principal speaker.
Ransdell said, “I surely hope
that all members and their wives
(farmers and associates) will hear
this outstanding farm leader and
enjoy the free chicken barbecue.
Children of members are welcome
at 75 cents each. Serving will be
from 6:30 to 7:30, followed im
mediately by important business.”
Any farmer who wishes to join
is invited, paying the membership
fee at the door. Norman Cagle,
membership chairman, says that
several are expected to do that.
If North Carolina packing
plants produced all the beef and
pork consumed in the state each
year, it would add income of
$107,692,000 for cattle and $114,-
723,400 for hogs.
