Judy’s friends are not surprised at her selection, in fact, they would have been surprised had she not been selected. This talented young miss was a high school cheer leader, Homecoming queen, studied voice and dancing and taught herself to twirl the baton. Judy, daughter of Mr. and E Mrs. Floyd Upole, writes her par ents that she is delighted with her studies, her role as majorette and ■ every thing about the Banner Elk College, including the recent snow. Senior Class Officers Linda McNair has been elected president of the Senior Class of West End High School; to serve with her are Nancy Williams vice-president; Carolyn Seawell corresponding secretary; Phyllis Jean Godfrey, recording secre tary; and Annette Thompson, treasurer. To serve as mascots for the class are Jim Blue, son of Mr, and Mrs. E. J. Blue and nephew of Senior Annette Thompson, and Laura Lowder, daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Dean Lowder of Aber deen and a cousin of Senior Carol Deane Hartsell. The Seniors have been busy selling ads for the annual and monogrammed blouses to help with the class finances. Junior Class Officers Clare Cole was elected president of' the Junior Class; to serve with her are Billy Monroe, vice- president; Nancy McLean, secre tary; Mack McDonald, treasurer; reporters, Phyllis Burns and Billy Harris. The grade parents for the Juniors are Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cole, Mr. and Mrs. Z. B. Conrad, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Sutphin, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Har ris and the Rev. and Mrs. David McLean. The active Junior Class has recently made more than $200 through magazine subscrip tions to defray expenses for the Junior-Senior banquet. High salesmanship went to Clare Cole. Monogram Club Officers At the initial meeting of the High School Monogram Club, Roger Greene was elected presi dent; Thomas Garner, vice-presi dent; Linda McNair, secretary; Lois Martin, treasurer; and re porters are Clare Cole and Jim my Dunn. Mank Hunley was appointed chairman of the committee to write the constitution; serving with him are Phyllis Jean God frey, Judy Williams, Phillip i Greene. Sue Thomas was appoint ed chairman of the project com mittee and to serve with her are Charlotte Thomas, Johnny Rob bins and Jackie Donaldson. Lions Club Program Dr. John C. Grier, Jr. of Pine- hurst spoke to the Lion’s Club Thursday evening in behalf of the club’s White Cane Drive. Lion Cub Billy McKenzie was welcom ed into club membership and special guests were Tommy Mc Neill and D. L. Ritter, Jr. The dinner meeting was held at the recreation hall of the Presbyteri an Church, with representatives of the Woman’s Club serving the meal. Receives Cifation George Houck, Jr. has recently been promoted to .Captain at his Fort Meade AFB, Md. Captain Houck also received a citation in recognition of outstanding service during his tour of duty last year at Saglek, Labrador. Appointed Chairman Miss Bert McCrummen was ap pointed Chairman of the Presby- terial Constitution and by-laws at the meeting of the Women of Fayetteville Presbytery in Lum- berton on Wednesday. Attending the meeting from the local church were Mrs. George Houck, Mrs. R. B. Lewis and Miss Grace Donaldson. Collect for UNICEF All children in the primary and junior departments of the church es of this community are invited to join in a drive tomorrow, Fri day evening, for the United In ternational Children’s Relief Fund. The children will meet at the Methodist Building at 6:30 p. m. and from there will disburse in groups, returning at 8:00 p. m. for refreshments. Mrs. Francis Currie, Jr. of the Sandspur Club and Mrs. E. L. Sutphin of the Woman’s Club are serving as co- chairmen of the drive. He was assisted by Edgar McNair and the Church Choir sang “The Old Rugged Cross.” Attend WSCS Meet Attending the Sub-district tneeting of the WSCS in Biscoe Thursday afternoon were Mrs. Dwight Richardson, Mrs. Fred Monroe, Mrs. M. J. Davis and Miss Blanche Monroe. Trip Winners Mr. and Mrs. Everette Cole left Thursday morning for a week’s vacation in Miami Beach, Fla. having been the lucky winners of the trip through the Red and White Company. The children are visiting friends—Kathy is with Susie VonCanon, Verona Ann is guest of Robert Gordon and Van and Rita are with Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Garrison in Pine- hurst. Al Trade Fair North Lewis spent most of the past week at the Trade Fair in Charlotte where the Troy Mobile Homes, of which he is president, had a display. Mrs. Lewis with Rick and Chuck joined him at the Fair on Saturday, had Satur- 'day evening dinner wi,th the Bob Youngblood family. Also guests of the Youngbloods for the week end from West End were Mr. and Mrs. Z. B. Conrad with Harry. The Lewis family toured the mountains on Sunday. Among other West Enders seen at the Trade Fair last week were Mr. and Mrs. Harold MaFkham with Becky, Janet, Janice Gor don, Libba Johnson and Allan McDonald. Personals Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Fletcher and E. L. Sutphin spent most of last week at their cottages at Windy Point with Mrs. Sutphin, Joanne and Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Clark and Mac of Lumberton going down for the weekend. Gotland is home after visiting friends in High Point and the Dan McDuffies in Fayetteville. PNjS Charles Brewer,, stationed with the United States Navy in Puerto Rico has been joined there by his wife and two children, Kevin and Andrew. The family was with Charles’s mother, Mrs. Edith Brewer, before Hying to Puerto Rico. We welcome Mr. and Mrs. Grover English and their son, Kirby, who have moved here from Hamlet and live in the John Greene home. Linda Brewer, Morris Shelton and Mr. and Mrs. Bud William son of Troy attended the State Fair on Saturday. Miss Alberta Monroe is visit ing friends -in Wilmington. 'The Rev. and Mrs. Colon God win, missionaries to Ghana in Africa, spoke to the Baptist con gregation Sunday evening on itheir work in mission field. The Rev. Mr. Godwin is direct or of a school and Mrs. Godwin says she serves as handyman. Mrs. Gqdwin is the former Miss Carolyn Smith of the Roseland community and a graduate of West End High School. The Rev. Mr. Godwin is a student at N. C.
