Page SIXTEEN THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1961 WEST END NEWS BY SALLLY AUMAN PTA Supper - Bazaar The Parent-Teacher organiza tion will sponsor a roast beef and chicken stew supper at the school cafeteria Friday night, November 3 from 5-8 o’clock. Mrs. Everette Cole, PTA ways-means chairman, urges all interested persons to lend a helping hand with this project because the proceeds will be used to provide public music in the schools for this year. In addition to the supper, a bazaar will feature handicraft with Mrs. W. M. Chriscoe, chair man; food both with Mrs. Harold ' Markham as chairman, white ele phant with Mrs. John Carter as chairman and farm produce with Mrs. Lynn Martin and Mrs. Kimes Blake as co-chairmen. Serving on the supper commit tee are Mrs. Porter, Miss Winifrd Kernodle, Mrs. E. L. Sutphin, Les lie Gordon and W. A. Johnson, Jr. How It Began When Carol Lucas and Bobby Killian made their trip to the altar in West End Saturday, they gave the snow bound vacations (the three big ones) of March 1960 credit for the beginning of their romance. It was then they became better acquainted, after living across the street from each other in Greensboro. Eor Carol’s wedding gift, Bobby gave her a gold bracelet with a snow flake on it. This is another milestone in Carol’s life. She was valedictorian of her high school graduating class and at East Carolina College, was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universi ties. Also while at East Carolina, she was elected state president of the Future Teachers Organization and regional director of the or ganization’s Southeastern District for the United States. The superintendent of the Greensboro City Schools shared the platform with Carol on one occasion and told her he would appreciate her application. Since then she has taught there, except for ohe year in California. Last year she was sponsor for the Annual in addition to her English classes at Page High School. That year, the Annual was recognized as the best in the state at a show ing in Chapel Hill. At Home Our best wishes to this couple. Carol is the fourth West End High School valedictorian to be married in the Methodist Church in the past four months. They were Mary Jo Davis (Mrs. John Doerin- ger), and Mr. and Mrs. Chris McDonald (Dot VonCanon). Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lewis were at Home Sunday afternoon honor ing her father, Wade Honeycutt, on his 90th birthday. Receiving the guests were Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and two of her sisters, Mrs. Isaac Lewis of Salisbury and Mrs. Fred Trimmer of Washington, D. C. A white linen cut-work cloth was used on the serving table with crystal and silver appointments. The table held an arrangement of yellow and white mums and a decorated cake. Mrs. Harold Markham and Mrs. Lynn Mclnnis presided at the punch bowl alter nately. They were assisted in serving punch, cakes, nuts and mints by Misses Judy and Joan Lewis of Salisbury, Mr. Honey cutt’s granddaughters. Receiving elsewhere were Isaac Lewis of Salisbury and W. M. Chriscoe, Jr. Mr. Honeycutt has endeared himself to many friends here having spent three winters with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, and al most a hundred of them called during the afternoon to wish him many happy returns of the day. At 90, he maintains a keen in terest in world affairs, reading and visiting with friends. A re tired farmer, Mr. Honeycutt-is a native of Yancey County, having been a former teacher and school board member. Two daughters, Mrs. Joe Buder of New York and Mrs. Edna . Taylor of Phoenix, Ariz. were unable to attend. ■ Halloween Carnival The Grammar School had a Hal loween Carnival Friday afternoon. There was fun for all, fishing for the smaller children and, a sock hop for the larger ones. Of course, there were comestibles, cake walks and the election of Hallo- Church, spoke to the Presbyterian! congregation at a family night supper Sunday. They gave an in formative talk on the congrega tions’ benevolent giving for the past three years. Personals Eugene Dunn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dunn, is undergoing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Mrs. Eunice Williams and Mrs. Jean Williams of Abneyville call ed on Misses Edith and Vesta Markham Sunday afternoon. The Markhams were weekend guests of Mrs. John Gibson in Laurel Hill. Attending homecoming at Beth- leham Sunday were the Leslie Gordons, the W. E. Jacksons, Mrs. Hubert Black and family and the John Thompsons. Mrs. Wesley Thomas of White Hill and Mrs. E. R. Outland at tended the funeral of their aunt in Ramseur on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Graham Lancaster of Richmond, Va. were guests last week of the Allan McDonalds. Jackson Springs Mr. and Mrs. Mike Lambeth, with Joyce Jim and Joe visited Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Lambeth in Brown Summitt on Sunday. They also called on Mr. and Mrs. Vann Stanfield in Greensboro. Mr. and Mrs. John Blanchard of Charlotte were weekend guests of the Edgar Grahams. The ween royalty. Paul H. Hawks of the recruiting station in Sanford. Donald Ralph Behnet, Route 1, Cameron, selected assignment to the Army Air Defense Command with assignment to the Milwau kee, Wis. area. He graduated from Cameron High School in 1961 and was a farmer in civilian life. Warren Giles Tillman, Route 1, Carthage, enlisted under the Graduate Specialist program for assignment to the 23 weeks Radio Repairman course at the South- Eastern Signal School, Fort Gor don, Ga. He graduated from High- falls High School in 1955 and worked with Carthage Fabrics in Carthage before enlisting. Emery Parker, Route 3, Car thage, enlisted for vocational training in the Aircraft Mainte nance career field. He attended school at Vass-Lakeview before entering the US Army. All volunteers are now at Fort Jackson, S. C., where they will be assigned to eight weeks basic training before entering assign ments for which they enlisted. Sgt. Hawks said openings in the Air Defense Command and in technical schools were very good and that high school graduates who qualify can take their pick. All assignments are approved by long-distance phone calls, he added. Witnesses to Attend Assembly at Florence The Southern Pines Congrega tion (central unit) of Jehovah’s Witnesses are making plans to leave Friday to attend a three day Bible training program at the McClenaghan High School in Florence, S. C. Robert Matney, presiding min ister of the local group and John Adams hate been given a special assignment at the assembly which will be open to the public.
