May, Jcneeling at left, examines charred wood and trash that were the only contents of a safe found buried several feet underground back of the Broad Street Pharmacy last Thursday morning. The photo was made at Mr. May’s auto body shop where he cut into the bottom of the safe with a torch and then knocked part of the bottom out with a sledge hammer. Others in the photo are: Joe Montesanti, Jr., proprietor of Broad Street Pharmacy, kneel ing at right; and standing, left to right, Alton Scott, Sam Richard son and Harry Chatfield. Workmen digging a hole for a new oil tank back of the drug store unearthed the safe and it was re moved from the hole and carried away by Mr. May and his wrecker. Mr. Richardson, whose memories of Southern Pines go back more than 50 years, recalled that many years ago, there was no building on the Broad Street Pharmacy corner, but that there were frame buildings west of that location on Pennsyl vania Ave., and he thinks the safe may have come from one of the offices in those buildings. There were no indentifyipg marks of any kind inside or outside the safe.
