Joe’s Grill Host To Local Firemen Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hatch enter tained 14 members of the volun teer fire department with a steak dinner at their place of business, Joe’s Grill on N. W. Broad St., Thursday night of last week. . The dinner was given in ap- rreciation for efforts of the fire men in extinguishing a fire at the restaurant several weeks ago. The firemen’s work at that time was credited with saving the building from destruction. The restaurant has been repaired and repainted since the fire. Members of the fire depart ment who were not able to at tend the dinner last week are invited to come when they can for their steak dinners. Fire Chief Frank Kaylor ex- presed the appreciation of the firemen for the hospitality accord ed them. WITH THE Armed Forces Airman Nelson F. Webster, a former Southern Pines High School student and the son of Mrs. Mabel P. Webster of Sara sota, Fla., has been selected to attend the United States Air Force technical training course for aircraft and missile mainte nance specialists at Amarillo Air Force Ba&e, Texas. Airman Webster was selected for advanced training on the ba sis of his interests and aptitudes determined during basic train ing. The airman was graduated from Sarasota High School prior to entering the service. Army Specialist Four Herman R. Phillips, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert L. Phillips, Sr., Route 2, Cameron, has been assigned to the 205th Military Police Com pany at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Fort Leavenworth is the home of the Army Command and Gen eral Staff College. The college, the Army’s senior tactical school, was established in 1881 as the School of Application of Infantry and Cavalry. Specialist Phillips entered the Army in October, 1958, and is a military policeman in the com pany. He is a 1957 graduate of Cameron High School.. His wife, Margaret, lives in Leavenworth, Kan. Youth Returned From Brooklyn to Face Trial Here Thomas Earl Hainesworth, West Southern Pines youth sought since last July in connec tion with several bredk-ins in this area, was returned from Brooklyn, N. Y., this weekend and lodged in Moore County jail at Carthage. He is charged with breaking and entering and larceny at Wedge Inn and two service sta tions on Midland Road. A companion in the robberies, j Willie Light, also of West South ern Pines, was tried and sen tenced to prison at the August term of Superior Court. Police Chief Earl Seawell and Chief Deputy H. H. Grimm of the Moore County sheriffs de partment went to Brooklyn on notification of authorities there that Hainesworth was in custody, returning him Monday to Moore. Bobby was a guest of Governor Sanford at a luncheon for helping Moore County 4-H’ers lead the State in the number of pine trees (109,000) set out in 1961. By C. E. LEWIS, JR. Assistant County Agricultural Agent Forestry has been one of the many activities Bobby Maness of Route 1, Tlobbins, has excelled in during the past five years. Be cause of his intense interest in forestry and long, hard hours of work in the woods of his father’s farm, Bobby has been the recipi ent of many forestry and closely related awards. The latest award was presented to him last week at the First An nual Awards Banquet of the North Carolina Wildlife Federa tion as port of their Seventeenth Annual Convention held in Greensboro. Bobby was the recipient of the Central Region 4-H Conservation Award. The award, a 15-inch gold trophy, was presented by L. R. Harrill, State 4-H Club lead er from N C. State College. Other conservation awards pre sented were for outstanding work in Wildlife, Soil Conservation, Boy Scouting, FFA, Water Con servation and Conservation Writing. Also, State Awards were presented by Gov. Terry Sanford to Protector of the Year, Junior Conservationist of the Year, and Senior Conservationist of the Year. Bobby is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thurrrian Maness of Route 1, Robbins. In his 4-H Club Fores try Project, Bobby has planted a total of 12,500 pine trees and 2,000 red cedars; completed the 4-H tree identification project and constructed fire lanes for five Graveside Rites Held at Pinebluff For Mrs. Sproul A graveside funeral service was conducted Saturday after noon at the Pinebluff Cemetery for Mrs. Florence Edna Little Sproul, 76, of Pinebluff, who died early Friday morning at Moore Memorial Hospital. Roland H. Delano of Pinebluff, lay reader, officiated at the service. Mrs. Sproul had been a resi dent of Pinebluff for the past 15 years and had been an occa sional winter visitor to the com munity for more than 40 years previously. Bom near Media, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. William Seely Little of Phil adelphia and New York Citv, Mrs. Sproul, widow of A. C. Sproul, had lived most of her life in New York before making her permanent residence in Pine bluff. She is survived by her daugh ter, Miss Pauline Sproul, who is office manager of the North Car olina Sanatorium, McCain; and a sister, Mrs. Anna M. Graham of Pinebluff. She was a sister of the late Mrs. Mary Wilson Holt- Smith and the late Miss Hannah Pauline Little, who died a num ber of years ago, both of whom had also had long association with Pinebluff. Their mother, Mrs. Little, had become a visitor there in the early days of the town’s development as a winter resort, and the family built sev eral houses in the community. Mrs. Sproul, who had been in poor health for some time, brpke a hip in a fall at her home about three weeks before her death. BROUGHTON Commissioner N9, 16c Perhaps in special celebration of Children’s Book Week, now being observed nationally, the Southern Pines Library selects this moment to make announce ment of a new record of increased book circulation. Using the figures of last year, which ended in June for purposes of comparison, it is evident that more books, by a great deal, are being read than ever before. The figure for the entire past fiscal year was 29,039, with an increase during the year of 1,039 over the previous year. But, for the past four months since the end of the fiscal year, July 1, the pace has increased remarkably. During the four months of the present fiscal year, circulation in creased by 1,661. In other words: in four months the circulation was 622 books higher than it was in the whole twelve months of last year. The Library also reports good news in the way of community interest among the young people. It appears that under the Girl Scout community service pro gram three local girls, sophomores this year, have enrolled as volun teer helpers during the rush hours in the afternoons. “Each one takes an afternoon George Y. Stutts Succumbs at 88 George Yancey Stutts, 88, of Route 1, Carthage, died Thursday night of last week in the Moore Memorial Hospital, Pinehurst, after an illness of several months. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Sunday in the Putnam Bap tist Church, conducted by the Rev. William Hancock, the Rev Jefferson Davis and the Rev. Melvin Vaughn. Burial was in th.2 church cemetery. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. H. B. Davis, Mrs, C. B. Maness of Carthage, Mrs John W. McAnulty of Robbins and Mrs. Monroe Wicker of Lemon Springs; six sons, J. C. Stutts of Morris- ville, Dewey, Bernice and Joseph D.
