The entire delegation of 48 young
people--from 28 states—were
guests of the Grocery Manufac
turers of America at a specisd
“Welcome Home” luncheon at the
Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, yesterday.
Following the luncheon, the IF-
YES began a six-day evaluation
session at the National 4-H Cen
ter, Washington, D. C. In the
nation’s capital they are confer
ring with officials of the U. S.
Department of Agriculture and
State, their host countries’ em
bassies, and the Nationail 4-H
Club Foundation. The delegates
are expected to be at home for
Thanksgiving Day.
The International Farm Youth
Exchange is a 4-H Club people
to-people program conducted by
the National 4-H Club Founda
tion in behalf of the Cooperative
Extension Service. It is privately
supported by 4-H Clubs, business
and industrial firms, foundations
and individuals. The Danforth
Foundation of St. Louis, Mo., sup
ports IFYE with a five year grant
started in 1960.
During 1961, a total of 108 U. S.
delegates have been assigned to
41 countries. In return, 109 foreign
exchanges have visited the U. S.
In both instances, the participants
live with rural families as they
learn about the life and agricul
ture of their host countries.
If the 1,325 U. S. delegates who
have preceded these young people
since 1948 are any indication, each
of the returning IFYEs will share
his experience through more than
100 personal appearances to audi
ences of 8,200 people, along with
11 radio and television interviews
and some 40 newspaper and maga
zine articles.
