took an active part in working on
the sapper, wich assistance from
ladies'of the throe Vass churches
that sponsor the troop—^Baptist,
Methodist and Presbyterian—and
mothers of the Scouts. The ladies
furnished hushpuppies, cornbread.

community house. During the eve
ning Charles Riddle of Southern
Pines, Moore District Scout ex
ecutive, and Roy McCallum of
Raleigh, council field representa
tive, put on a program about
Scouting, showing a film and pre
senting other information.
Karl Schweinfurth, former
Scoutmaster of the troop, was in
charge of the supper project.
“Century Club” membership is
a designation given to individuals
or firms contributing $100 or
more to the annual fund drive for
funds to operate the Scouting
program in the 12-county Occon-
eechee Council of which Moore
District is a part.
Scout officials expressed ap
preciation to Harold Williams,
chairman of the troop committee
of Troop 810, for the efforts of his
committee in putting the Vass
Scout fund drive over the top.
Many donations were made by
individuals. These contributions,
combined with the more than
$100 raised by the supper, made
Vass the first community in the
county to exceed its quota in the
current county-wide Boy Scout
fund drive.

Fatal Shooting
Ruled Accident
Wayne Kivett, the 15-year-old,
Route 3, Raeford boy, who acci
dentally shot and killed a 15-year,
old neighbor, Patricia Ann Capel,
Saturday, is a former Sandhills
resident, having lived at Niagara,
before'Ills family moved to Hoke
County early this year. He at
tended the Southern Pines school.
The shooting victim also had
Moore County connections. She
was a granddaughter of Mrs. Ben
Brady of Robbins.
According to news accounts of
the tragedy, Kivett and a friend
stopped at the girl’s house on
their way hunting. His shotgun,
thought to be unloaded was point
ed at the girl jokingly and the
boy pulled the trigger.
The shooting was ruled acci
dental and no charges were made.
‘Diabetes Week’
Check-Up Urged
This is “Diabetes Week.” All
over the nation communities are
putting on local diabetes detec
tion drives. The main idea is to
remind all to get a check up to
find out whether they have dia
betes.
The most likely targets for dia
betes are persons who are related
to diabetics, because the disease
is hereditary. Other likely candi
dates are persons who are over
weight or past 40 years or age.
Women past 40 are more likely to
contract diabetes than men.
The diabetes tests are easy and
painless, according to the Ameri
can Medical Association which
urges persons wanting a check to
see their family doctor.
