SCRAPER'S THE THING ,
If you park your car outside at
night, chances are the windows
are coated with frost or ice when
you go out in the morning. A
small ice scraper in your car is a
good idea.
Winter weather can b^ as tricky
as it can be dangerous. The roads
may be clear and dry in your
area, but covered with ice 50 mile^
away. The North Carolina De
partment of Motor Vehicles ad
vises . you to check road condi
tions along the route you will
travel before starting on a winter
trip, and always to carry a set
of reinforced tire- chains in the
trunk.

MOORE COUNTY RECORDER'S COURT
$500 Cash Bond Forfeited in Case
Charging Attempt to Cheat Old Man
One of the largest cash bond
forfeitures in the history of Moore
County Recorder’s Court at Car
thage took place Monday when
no defendant appeared after the
case of Susan Taylor (alternate
ly listed as Susie Tayloe) was
called.
A person of this name had post
ed a $500 cash bond, recently on
-charges of attempted larceny and
fraud in connection with the at
tempted cheating of E. L. Wil
liamson, 82, of Route 2, Seagrove
by an alleged magazine subscrip-
cion sales crew.
The Taylor woman, who had
given her address as Danville,
Va., and her age as 29, had in her
possession Mr. Williamson’s check
for $184.50, which she and two
other women had attempted to
cash at several places in Sea-
grove, when she was arrested by
.Joore County officers.
She was placed in jail at Car
thage and bond for her appear-
ancij in court was made the pext
day by a man giving the name
of W. C. Merrick who said he was
field manager for the magazine
subscription agency. He arrived
in Carthage, officers reported,
driving a 1960 Cadillac.
To judge from Monday’s pro
ceedings, the manager apparently
thought it was worth forfeiting
his $500 to keep his crew mem
ber out of standing trial. The
crew had told the old man that
his money would go as contribu
tions to veterans’ hospitals and
that he would receive a fine, tax-
free gift in addition.

IT DOESN'T PAY
If you feel yourself getting
sleepy while driving,, the State
Department of Motor Vehicles
suggests you pull off the road and
relax. A cup of coffee and a few
breaths of cold winter air should
wake you up. If you’re still
sleepy, stop wherever you can get
lo bed. It simply does not pay to
take chances with fatigue if you
are behind the wheel of a car.
