She is ?1 years old and lives on a farm in North Carolina. Such is Miss Jane Owen, a young Ameri can. . . now visiting in Castelnau- dry. ‘Thanks to Miss Owen, Ameri ca is more attractive to us. We now know that behind the mon ey-madness of the immense land of America there are some human beings who resemble us in that which we hold most -dear: the pursuit of spreading justice and liberty among all men.” So wrote French journalist Rob ert Fort in “La Depeche,” a Tou louse, France, daily paper, con cerning the visit to rural France Of Jane Owen, a senior at Pfeif fer College, Misenheimer, and an Elementary Education major, who. is sharing in the International Farm Youth Exchange program. Miss Owen is the daughter of Farmers Divert Wheat and Barley Acreage in Monre Wheat and barley producers in Moore County have shown con siderable interest in the Wheat Stabilization and the Feed Grain Barley Programs for 1962. To date, 410 farmers have filed in tentions to participate in the Wheat Stabilization Program and have reduced plantings of their wheat by 2,680 acres, becoming eligible for advance payments in the amount of $25,190. Under the 1962 Feed Grain Bar ley Program, 41 farmers to date have filed intentions to divert 179 acres of barley and are eligible for advance payments in the amount of $1,112. These acres diverted under the Wheat and Barley Programs will be devoted to conserving land uses for 1962.. All eligible producers that have not signed up to participate should visit the county ASCS of fice by December 1, as this is the last date for signing up, Walter I. Fields, office manager, said this week. Mr. and Mrs.. Ben W. Owen, Route 2, Seagrove, in Moore County. She has returned to the United States from France and will re-enter Pfeiffer at the start of the college’s spring semester in January. Her return to Moore county came two days before Thanksgiv ing, allowing her to spend the holiday with her family. During her visit to France the Carolina co-ed shared many of her 4-H Club experiences with French rural youth. She has lived with eight different French fam ilies, and appeared before many iprofeissional agricultural groups and in numerous radio programs including one over the French national radio network. Effective The effectiveness of Miss Owen’s work was recently rec ognized in a letter to her parents by E. T. York, Jr., Administrator of the Federal Extension Service, Washington, who wrote; ■‘Certainly as a representative of the U. S. Extension Service, I am very proud of an outstand ing product of our 4-H program. . . In Paris I, along with Jane, at tended a reception given at the American Embassy honoring Sec retary of Agriculture Freeman and attended by our Ambassador, General Gavin, and North Caro lina’s Congressman Harold Cool ey. Jane and a sister -‘IFY” held the spotlight the entire evening.” Miss Owen sailed on June 9 for France. In addition to living in the homes of eight French families, she has taken side trips to Spain, Switzerland, and Italy. Objective View The same French journalist, in a dispatch from the Castelnaudry region wrote, ‘‘Her trip is not a tourist trip. .. . she has been studying French agriculture, has been intimately involved in the problems of French agricultural workers. It is because she is in close touch with reality that she is acquiring an objective view of living conditions of the French farmer. . . and reciprocally, the families that take her in are get ting a more accurate idea of what rural American people and Amer ica Itself are like.” O’Neil Has New Radio Programs Originating Here Two radio programs from WFNC radio at Fayetteville, origi nating at a new studio construct ed by Tom O’Neil at his Wedge Inn restaurant on Midland Road, began this week.
