The most comprehensive bird
book ever done on North Caro
lina birds is still heavily in de
mand. Since the release in Octo
ber, 1960, of the revised printing
■of '■‘Birds of North Carolina,”
3,043 copies have been sold.
The popular nook has been a
perennial best seller for some ten
years, but had been out-of-print
some time before the revised e-
dition was printed.
The revision, with green-on
gold cloth binding, contains 463
pages covering 411 birds found in
the state. It has 47 , full-page
plates, 24 in color and 23 in black
and white.
More than 500 copies of the
book were purchased during Nov-
-ember and December of 1960, pre
sumably as Christmas gifts, Harry
T. Davis, Director of the Depart
ment of Agriculture’s Museum of
Natural History, reports.
Authors of the original work
were H. H. Brimley, for 47 years
director of the State Museum, Dr.
C. S. Brimley, his brother and for
25 years on the staff of NCDA’s
entomology division, and Dr. T.
Gilbert Pearson, head of the Nat-
tional Audubon Society for many
years. It has been revised by
Davis in collaboration with Dr.
David L. Wray, currently on the
staff of the NCDA entomology
division and curator of its. insect
collection.
The revision includes 14 birds
new to the state since the previ
ous printing in 1942. The volume
begins with a complete story, by
the original authors, of the first
observations made by the early
colonists and all subsequent stud-

Moore County voters will elect
this week a supervisor from this
county to the board of sup-srvi-
sors of the Upper Cape Fear Soil
and Water Conservation District.
Two men have been nominated
by petition of 25 voters for this
office. They are, James Fulk,
Route 3, Carthage, and Kent Har
bour, Cameron.
Bollot boxes have been placed
as follows: W. M. Michael’s store.

No state funds were appropri
ated for printing of the book. A
Raleigh printer “gambled” with
the authors on the 1942 printing,
taking from the sales proceeds
only the actual costs of printing
without profit. The remainder of
the proceeds was set up in a spe
cial “revolving” fund for reprint
ing future revisions.

Saturday, December 9. All voters
must sign the ballot for it to be

The man elected to this office
will serve a 3-year term begin
ning January 1, 1962. SCWD su
pervisors serve without pay. Tliey
receive compensation only for
the four quarterly meetings and
the annual State Supervisors
meeting, in an amount n.°eded to
cover expenses.
Mr. Fulk has served as one of
the three supervisors from Moore
County for the past three years.
His term of office expires on De
cember 31. For two. years he has
served as chairman of the .10-
member, three-county District
Board. The three counties in the
district are Moore, Lee and Har
nett. The other present super
visors from Moore are J. H. Poole,
West End, and Herbert McCaskill,
Route 1, Robbins.
Mr. Harbour has been serving
faithfully for a number of years
as a community committeeman for
the Agricultural Stabilization and
Conservation Service.
