ABERDEEN Blue Knights, Local Girls Make Clean Sweep of First Four Basketball Games By RONALD McCRIMMON The Southern Pines boys and girls basketball teams defeated the Carthage teams in both games Saturday night. Tuesday night both Southern Pines teams scor ed easy victoriies over the Aber deen teams at Aberdeen. Saturday night, the girls de feated the Carthage girls 44 to 42 in overtime. The Southern Pines girls kept a slight lead during the first three quarters but trail ed in the last quarter. Forward Peggy Worth scored two free throws with five seconds remain ing in the game and put it in a two-minute overtime. Joan Grov er scored a field goal and Peggy Worth scored a free throw for Southern Pines. Carthage was only able to score one point as the Southern Pines girls emerged with a victory. Forward Joan Grover led the locals with 21 points, Peggy Worth had 15 and Mary Chappell 6. The guards were Clara Harper, Janie Gehweiler and Susan Hunt- ley who scored two points. The substitutes were Carolyn, Niles, Belinda Michaels and Nancey Rowe. For Carthage, Paula Myrick scored one point, Rosemary Kelly 18, and Jane Myrick 13 points The guards were Jane Womack, Catherine Flinchum and Kelly In the boys’ game. Southern Pines took a 41 to 36 victory. Neither of the teams played to their potential capacity. The boys were trailing 23-20 at the half; at the end of the third quarter Southern Pines had taken a two- point lead, 32-30. In the fourth quarter neither team took a large lead and it was a close game down to the final seconds. John Bristow was high scorer in the game with 13 points. Har old Williford had 10, Dick Sey mour 3, Eddie McKenzie 3 and Robert McCrimmon 12. Steve Paschal scored 9 points for Carthage, Hendricks 3, Penn Benner 5, Eddie Cockman 2, John Frye 7, and Matthews 10. Aberdeen Games Tuesday night at Aberdeen, the girls took an easy 48 to 35 vic tory. The girls took the lead early in the first quarter and kept it throughout the entire game. Dsggy Worth led the team, hit ting 29 points. Joan Grover scor ed 15 and Mary Chapp.3ll scored four. The halftime score was 28-19 in favor of Southern Pines. In the fourth quarter the girls at one time had an 18-point lead. The guards were Clara Harper, Janie Gehweiler, and Belinda Michael. The substitutes were Carolyn Niles, Brenda Watkins, Julia McMillan, Susan Huntley, Nancey Rowe, Mary McMillan and Janet Phillips. Frankie Swaim scored 23 points for Aberdeen, Jane Brady 4, Troutman 5. The guards were Alice Robbins, Carolyn Wynn and Voss. The substitutes were Betty Swaim, Maurer who scored 2 points, Gloria Cruce and McKeith- en. Southern Pines kept a slight lead throughout the boys’ game. Aberdeen was unable to offer any threats in the second half. South ern Pines’s experience and height ov.erpowered the inexperienced Aberdeen team. Aberdeen has two freshman forwards on their starting lineup. Johnny Bristow again was high scorer for South- PAGE “A” ern Pines with 21 points. Harold Williford scored 14, Wally Wal lace 9, Eddie McKenzie 6, Dick Seymour 3. The substitutes were Ralph Hendren 2„ Robert Mc Crimmon, Joe Hiatt, Hal Hassen- felt, and Lynn Daeke. Center Bobby Alpert led the Red Devils by scoring 24 points. Wade Lewis scored 12, Sheffield 3, David Funderburk 5, Smith 1, Daryl Wynn, and Burns 1. Tomorrow night the boys and girls teams will play at West End, a game originally scheduled to be played here. Tuesday, they travel to Highfalls, Game time is 7 o’clock. North Carolina has 22,248 acres of cotton out of production on whole farm Conservation Reserve contracts. In addition,- cotton re leased from partial CR farms is not reallocated, and 3,446 acres are frozen by this regulation. Adams Ailends Meeting Of Superintendents Luther A. Adams, superinten dent of Southern Pines schools, attended the winter conference of the Division of Superint.andents of the North Carolina Education Association at Durham this week. The conference began ’Tuesday afternoon and ran through this morning. The superintendents heard ad dresses by Dr. Dallas Herring, chairman of the State Board of Education; Dr. Charles F. Carroll, superintendent. State Department of Public Instruction; and others and took part in discussions of school administrative matters. A highlight of the Wednesday afternoon program was d tour of the Research Triangle area. Wiring and electrical equip ment used out-of-doors should be designed for the purpose.
