Town officials say that General Barnes was a faithful and active member of the board, until his resignation. Born in Washington, D. C., General Barnes attended schools there and was a graduate of George Washington University, at Washington. He was appointed a second lieutenant of Field Ar tillery in the Army in 1912. Short ly thereafter, while stationed at Vancouver Barracks in the state of Washington, his regiment was sent to the Philippines, following a threat of Japanese aggression Returning three years later, he served on the Mexican border and then as an instructor in Field Ar tillery in World War I. Stationed at various Army posts thereafter. General Biarnes at tended and graduated from; the Field Artillery Advanced Course in 1923, the Command and Gen eral Staff School in 1925, and the Army War College in 1930. Rising in rank and positions of responsibility. General Barnes sailed early in December, 1941 for the Philippines with a convoy of troops and supplies. Between Hawaii and the Philippines, the convoy received a message telling of the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7. The convoy then headed for Australia where General Barnes attempted to get supplies through to the be leagured forces under Genera] Douglas MacArthur in the Phil ippines which were by then block aded. When MacArthur flew to Au stralia later. General Barnes served on his staff at Melbourne as supply officer until he was or dered back to the United States in 1942 to take command of the 97th Division Artillery at Camp Swift, Texas. In‘1944, General Barnes was sent to the European Theater of Operations as commander of the 61st Field Artillery Brigade, with the 15th Army. Upon return to the United States after victory in Europe, he was stationed at At lanta, Washington, D. C., and at Fort Bragg. While at Fort Bragg, he and his wife bought their home in Knollwood and lived there as much as they could, before his re tirement. Air Force Recruiter Here Each Thursday Recent changes in the Air Foi’ce recruiting organization are sending a new recruiter,! Sgt. E. R. Hunter, to Southern Pines. The headquarters for recruiting in the area is now at Rockingham, rather than Fayetteville. Sergeant Hunter visits the Sou thern Pines post office from 10 a.m. to noon, each Thursday. His Rochingham office is in the Rock ingham Hotel building.
