Lloyd P. Tate Is Honored At Meet
Of Moore County Hounds Saturday
- • IT T
Out at Mileaway Farm last Fri
day night there was a small gath
ering to celebrate the birthday ol
a long-time follower of the Moore
County Hounds, Lloyd P. Tate
owner of Starland Stables, and
son of the late Lloyd M. Tate, a
former director of equestrian af
fairs in Pinehurst.
The party was held at the home
of W. O. Moss, joint master, with
Richard Webb, of the local pack.
The sound of hound voices in the
nearby kennels kept tunc with
the birthday greeters.
The tribute to'Mr. Tate was re
peated in the field at the next
meet, held at Young’s Farm, when
the master-huntsman took the
opportunity to say a few simple
words in honor of his young
friend. Possibly it was the sight of
Lloyd Tate with his children, sit
ting their horses so competantly
among the large field of hunting
people, that sparked the master’s
short address: the children are
following in their father’s foot
steps it is widely recognized, as
their father himself took after his
father when it came to horse af
fairs. There were, in the master’s
words, thoughts of the past, of his
long friendship with the Tate
family. He told how he had taken
young Lloyd, then only eight and
still called by his old nickname
of “Junebug,” on a month tour of
the horseshow circuit; how he had
watched him grow up and hcnv
the senior Lloyd Tate had come
over often to give him a hand
with the hounds when Moss took
over the pack during the war |
years. --
“He was called Junebug in
those days,’' said Mr. Moss, “but
he has long-since outgrown that
name. Like his father he bea^'
the good name of Lloyd and that’s
what we call him today. I thought
a lot of Lloyd when he w’as a
youngster and I’ve thought a lo
uf him ever since. I :>m,especially
glad to see him and his children
out with us today.”
With which words the M.F.H-
huntsman led his hounds through
the pinegrove by the waterhok
and in less than a minute, wi'sh.
a burst of music, they found and
were away.
The run that followed laste '
some 55 minutes, with several
views of the big red fox, running
at the last hard, with tongue out
and brush low. Hounds ceased
their cry so abruptly in the midst
of the big Beaver Dam Swamp
that it was believed they had
pulled him down. On vote of the
field, another covert was dravm
and once again a fox was found.
The run lasted for several miles^
before scent failed and hounds
were blown off.
WAS IT 'NIPPY'?
A parakeet found by Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Noble of N.
Leak St. several weeks ago
may be "Nippy." a bird lost
by Mrs. Pauline Presby of
Aiken Road some five months
ago—but because she isn't
sure Mrs. Presby is leaving
the parakeet with the Nobles.
After The Pilot reported
December 14 that Mrs. Pres
by was still looking for her
lost Nippy. Mrs- Noble told
Mrs. Presby she had a similar
bird. When Mrs. Presby saw
it, she wasn't sure it was
hers, but was permitted to
take the parakeet home to
see if she could decide.
Still not sure after several
days, Mrs. Presby took the
bird back to the Nobles.
"Now I feel much better
about him," she said. "If it is
Nippy, I know he has a good
home. If it isn't—well, I'm
still lookingl"
