HUFFORD JAMES MERCER HUFFORDS, MARRIED SATURDAY, WILL LIVE IN NORFOLK Miss Anne Mae Morgan and James Mercer Hufford were mar ried Saturday morning at Beulah Kill Baptist Church, Pinehurst. The 11:30 ceremony was per formed by the minister, the Rev. Max Gilmore. Soloist was Dr. Bruce Warlick of Southern Pines The bride, daughter of Mrs. Ar thur C. Morgan of Pinehurst, and the late Mr. Morgan, is a gradu ate of the Pinehurst High School. She has been employed as a sec retary for Charles W. Davis, Ar chitect, in Raleigh. Mr. Hufford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mercer C. Hufford of Pine hurst, graduated from the Park School of Buffalo and attended the University of North Carolina, He is associated with the U. S. Gypsum Company in Norfolk, Va.. where the couple will live. The bride wore a gown of white Chantilly lace with a sweet heart neckline and tulle train. Her illusion veil was attached to a pearl tiara, and she earired a spray of white orchids. Maid of honor was the bride’s sister, Mrs. Davis Worsham o' Rockingham; the bridegroom’s sister, Mrs. Seth Mohr of Ham burg, N. Y. was bridesmaid. Both were attired in gowns of honey gold satin with bell-shaped skirts, and wore rrfatchlng pill box hats with small veils. Joel Hufford was his brother’s best man. Ushers were Seth Mohr and John McDade, of Hamburg, N. Y.; Alvin Morgan, of Pine- bluff, the bride’s brother, and Davis Worsham. TELEPHONE OX 2-6512 t Biddle & Company Announces Real Estate Transfers The Fownes Cottage, facing the Pinehurst Village Green, has been sold to a member of the Fownes family, according to an announcement this week by Bid dle & Company. Mr. and Mrs. H. Sinclair Kerr ;re the new owners. Mrs. Kerr is the granddaughter of H. C. Fownes, who built the house at a time when there were few pri vately owned homes in Pinehurst. The Fownes family have always been strong supporters of Pine hurst. "rhe late W. C. Fownes was president of the Pinehurst Coun try Club and of the Tin Whistles Club, as well as a president oi the United States Golf Associa tion. He, the late H. F. Horn- blower and the late H. H. Beck with, were important factors in Pinehurst’s financial solidarity. Mr. Kerr,'who was a flyer in World War II, was commended for his action after his plane, which had flown many missions in enemy territory, was shot down. He is president of Star Porcelain Company in Trenton, N. Y. The Kerrs, and their six chil dren, have a home in Pennington, N. J. ;unior bridesmaid, Sherri Cole of Aberdeen wore a long pink prin cess style velveteen dress with hat to match, and carried a single gardenia corsage. The bridegroom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Eaton of Carthage, had his brother, Gerald, as best man. Ushers were Franklin Yow and Charles Brown, of Carthage. David Lester Robinson of Lan caster, S. C., the bride’s cousin, was a junior attendant. At the reception following at the Little Club in Pinehurst, Mrs. Charles Roberts of Pinehurst was hostess, Mrs. Michael Babyak ol Raeford, presided at the guest book, Mrs. Raymond C. Auman cut the cake and Mrs. Paul Rob inson, of Lancaster, S. C., poured punch. Assisting were Mrs. Lee Cole of Aberdeen and Mrs. W. R. Dunlap of Pinehurst. Following a wedding trip to Virginia, the couple will live here. Mrs. Eaton is a graduate of the Pinehurst High School and is em ployed in the office at Golf World. A graduate of Carthage High School, Mr. Eaton has a position, with the Carthage Implement Company. Rehearsal Parly Mrs. Paul -Robinson, the bride’s aunt, and her daughter. Miss Greta Robinson, entertained at a rehearsal party Friday evening. Father and Son Winners in Ross Memorial Dec. 28 Two teams tied at 67 for low gross honors in the Donald J. Ross Memorial Father-Son golf tournament December 28 at Pine hurst were W. E. “Bud” Finwall and son, Tom, of Winston-Salem, who scored 39-37-76, and Jeff Howell and father, Ellis, of Lau- rinburg, the latter taking second low gross on draw, who posted 38-38-76. Gross winners at 34-37-71 were David Bennett, who won the Ross Memorial Junior Championship the previous day at the Pinehurst Counti-y Club, and his father. Grant; the latter the pro at the Florence, S. C. Country Club. Low net winners were Jim Einstein and son, Fred, of Win ston-Salem, 40-37-77-7-70; second low net was won by Alan Scott, Jr. and his father, of Salisbury, 41-45-86-15-71. . The Callaway System of handi capping was used to determine scores. MEETING CANCELLED The regular meeting of the Silver Foils Club’s board of di rectors, scheduled for today (Thursday), has been cancelled for the month of January. Biddle & Company also an nounces the sale, to Mrs. Norfleet P. Ray, of the Honeysuckle Cot tage on Cherokee Road from the Robert Gougers. Mrs. Ray plans to take occupancy in May. A longtime resident of Pine hurst, Mrs. Ray upon the death of her husband, became sole own er and manager of Ray’s Sports wear Shop in the Pinehurst Thea tre Building. Her daughter, Mrs.' Francis Rainey, and her family live in Southern Pines. A son, Edmund and wife are Raleigh residents. MR. AND MRS. DAVID R. EATON MISS WISEMAN AND MR. EATON, WED SATURDAY, WILL LIVE HERE After a reception at the Manor Hotel, the couple left for a wed ding trip to Niagara Falls, N. Y. and Canada. Pre-Nupiial Parlies' The bridal couple were honor guests at a cocktail party given last week by Mr. and Mrs. Wor sham at the Howard Johnson Res taurant. The Mercer Huffords were hosts at the rehearsal dinner Friday night at their Midland Road home. New Year's Miss Little Miss Page Homer Gifford made her appearance on New Year’s morning. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Heman Gifford, Jr., of 233 East 69th Street, was born Monday in Doctors’ Hospital, New York City. Her father, net- ter known by his nickname, “Bill,” grew up here and is the son of Mrs. Gifford of Pinehurst and Millbrook, N. Y. Here and Away Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Seborn Perry over the New Year week end were Dr. and Mrs. L. K. Mob ley of Thomasville. Mr. and Mrs. John R. Sibley got aome last Thursday from Hart ford, Conn, where they spent 'Christmas with their daughters, Mrs. Lincoln Kinnicutt and Mrs. Nathaniel Saltonstall, their hus bands and children. Joseph F. Remington left this week for two months in Winter Haven, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson C. Hyde returned last week following a holiday visit with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Hyde, Jr., and their children, in Richmond, Va. Here for several days last week with Mrs. S. A. Hennessee and her daughter, Mrs. John Barry and son, John, were Mrs. Barry’s sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Huntley and their four children, of Raleigh. Here visiting Mr. and Mrs. B. 'C. Vitt is her sister, Mrs. Robert Rosemond of New York City. Dr. Arthur W. Wright, who was the guest for a week of his sister and brother-in-law, Capt. and Mrs. Alec T. Roberts, returned Friday to his home in Albany, N. Y. Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Boatwright, Jr. and children, Nancy, Jay and Carole, are spending this week in Mrs. Sally Harrington’s cot tage. They are en route home to Westport, Conn, from Spartan burg, S. C., where they were holiday guests of Mrs. Boat wright’s mother. INFANT SON Mr. and Mrs. Thomas James Howe, of Aurora Hills Farm, Pinebluff, are the parents of a second son, William Johnston, born December 30 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.. Their boy Tom is 16 months old. Paternal grandpar ents are Mr. and Mrs. Francis W. Howe of Clarendon Gardens, Pinehurst. Division Winners In Parent-Child Tennis Tourney Despite somewhat frigid weath er, the holiday Parent-Child ten nis tournament was conducted, as scheduled, last Thursday through Saturday by Pinehurst Termis Club Pro Joe Roddey, who sup plied contestants with hot choco late during intermissions. Following are the results of the tournament, which was divi ded into three divisions: first for parents and older children; junior—for parents and younger children; and crazy quilt—for any family combination. Mrs. Herbert S. Kerr and son Roddy, of Pennington, N. J., won the first division, downing John Pottle and son, Peter, of South ern Pines, 10-7; Mrs. John Barry and son, John, 10-0 and Dr. Fran cis Owens and daughter, Judy 10-8. Mr. Kerr and daughter, Marcia playing in the same division, van quished Mrs. Albert Sneed and son, Charles, 10-7, but were them selves defeated by Dr. Owens and Judy, 7-10. Mrs. Harry Vale and daughter, Fifi, of Southern Pines, reached the finals by winning over Mrs Voit Gilmore and daughter, Ger ry, of Southern Pines, 10-5 and Mrs. David Drexel and daughter. Carol, of Southern Pines, 10-4. In another junior division match Mrs. Gilmore and Gerry defeated Jennifer and Audrey Owens, 10-7. Albert Sneed, Jr. and Bob Tufts were winners in the crazy quilt division, downing Tony Martin and John Barry, 11-9. In a candlelight service Satur day at Beulah Hill Baptist Church, Miss Claire Demarise Wiseman became the bride of David Ronald Eaton. 'Officiating minister was the Rev. James B. McQuere of Gas tonia. Miss Ann Ehrhardt, a class mate of the bride’s, played the or gan. Soloist was Melvin Williams of Aberdeen. Miss Ann Inman and Mrs. Nor man Callicutt had charge of church decorations, and the wed ding was directed by Mrs. Hob son Ritter. \ The daughter of Mr. and Mrs Joseph F. Wiseman of Pinehurst was given in marriage by her father. Her gown of silk organza, designed with fitted bodice, had long sleeves, and a scoop neck line outlined in Chantilly lace; the full skirt extended into s chapel train. Her waist length veil of tulle fell ffom a tiara of silk organza and pearls. She wore a single strand of pearls and car ried a cascade of gardenias. The matron of honor, Mrs. Phyllis Eanes of Southern Pines and bridesmaids. Misses Greta Robinson of Lancaster, S. C. and Betty Carolyn Roberts of Pine hurst, both cousins of the bride, wore ice blue velveteen sheath dresses, matching hats, and car ried long stemmed pink roses. The Mrs. Edgar A. Ewing Tel. Mrs. Hoyt Returns To Sandhills for Visits With Friends Mrs. Lydig Hoyt returned to Pinehurst this week. She is vis iting Mrs. John Dixon, but will be spending much time with her close friends, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Tuckerman. Mrs. Hoyt and her late husband rented the Tuck erman home Vaucluse, near Jackson Springs, for several years befAe they moved into their home on Midland Road During the years they spent in Pinehurst, Mrs. Hoyt played a leading role in many community projects. She was active in the Sandhills Woman’s Exchange and was a member of the Moore Mem orial Hospital Auxiliary and the Sandhills Music Association.
