♦ * i I h 4 s Page SIX THE PILOT—Soutliern Pines, North Carolina THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 1962 Local School Fund Gains $1 as Result Of Gambling Case in Court Last Week The local school fund was en riched by $1 last week after trial of a gambling case in Southern Pines Recorder’s Court. Confiscation of all the money involved in a West Southern Pines outdoor card game (illumi nated by the light of a nearby campfire) was ordered. The total was $2. Of this amount $1 was re turned by order of Judge W. Har ry Fullenwider to a 13-year-old boy who had been in the game when it was interruped by police. The boy, whose name is not re vealed because of his status as a juvenile, may or may not face trial in juvenile court, local court officials said.’ Charged with gambling were two West Southern Pines resi dents, Rush McLaughlin, 35, and Lee Daniel Frye, 19. McLaughlin was sentenced to jail until 6 p. m. on the day of trial and was taxed with the court costs. Frye paid the court costs of his case. The judge ordered that the cards be destroyed. Judge Fullenwider continued last week to give defendants in traffic cases a choice of walking a certain distance or for a certain time instead of paying then fines. All defendants were taxed with court costs. Here are the other cases heard in last week’s session; Bobby Lee Tew, speeding 50 in 35 zone, no valid operator’s per mit, $40, to include fine and costs; James Thomas, Fort Bragg, speed ing 50 in 35 zone, pay costs and walk five miles, no valid opera tor’s permit, non-suit; Jesse Wil liams, Jr., public drunk $10 and costs, same defendant, same charge, one month on the roads, suspended for 12 months on pay ment of $15 fine and costs, not to be convicted of a similar offense in 12 months; John Charles Cole, assault with deadly weapon, non suit; Max Layton Morris, Route 1, Cameron, disregarding stop sign, pay costs and walk to his home; John L. Robinson, improp er turn, accident, $10 and costs; Gerald Wayne George, 16, speed ing 60 in 45 zone, pay costs, tell parents and walk to ranger sta tion; Robert Lee Greene, Mt. Gil ead, speeding 47 in 35 zone, $12 and costs; Lloyd P. Tate, speed ing 45 in 35 zone, $15 and costs; James Archie Ross, Aberdeen, speeding 50 in 35| zone, $15 and costs; James Ricliard Hall, Car thage, speeding 45 in 35 zone, $10 and costs; Billy G. Cox, Dade City, Fla., speeding 46 in 35 zone, $11 and costs; Charles W. Scott. Fort Bragg, speeding 45 in 35 zone, disregarding stop sign, driv ing without lights, pay costs and walk 10 miles; Margaret Greene Mofield, Pinehurst, speeding, $10 and costs; Allen A. Lee, Point Claire, Quebec, Canada, exceed ing Scie speed, accident, $10 and costs. Lloyd C. Chambers, Jr., 16 Waco, Texas, speeding 50 in 35 zone, pay costs, tell father and walk wherever he goes for 72 hours; Ross Emile Townes, Dur ham, speeding 50 in 35 zone, dis regarding stop sign, $20 and costs. Catherine Berry, assault, nol pros with leave on payment of costs; same defendant, public drunk, pay the costs; Frederick M. Jew ett, Fort Bragg, public nuisance, public drunk, possession of whis key with seal broken, $15 and costs; George Rogers, Aberdeen, public drunk, vile and profane language, one month in jail, sus pended for 12 months on payment of $10 fine and costs, not to be convicted of a similar offense for 12 months; Vernon Ray Smith, public drunk, one month in jail, sentence in former case to be ex ecuted, to run concurrently. Reported in last week’s Pilot was the case of Billy Jackson Dark of Route 3, Pittsboro, who paid a $10 fine and the costs on a charge of disregarding a stop light, resulting in accident. No cause in a manslaughter charge had been found against Dark in a hearing held the previous week in connection with the local fatal traffic accident. I?,.'. ROBERT MASON Mason Becomes Editor of Norfolk Virginian-Pilot A $75 check goes to the widow of a Spanish-American War vet eran who was married to the vet eran during all or part of that War. The widow who married such a veteran after the War re ceives a $65( check. retirement living Robert Mason, who was editor of The Sanford Herald from 1952, to 1957, on Jan. 1 became editor of The Virginian-Pilot, of Nor folk. He succeeded Lenoir Chambers, who retired. As editor, Mr. Mason has direc tion of the newspaper’s editorial and news departments. He had been managing editor since 1959 and was associate editor prior to then. While in Sanford, Mr. Mason was a frequent visitor to the Sandhills, speaking here on sev eral occasions and having numer ous friends and acquaintances here. He grew up in Mebane, and graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1933. At Sanford, he helped to con vert The Herald from a semi weekly into a daily afternoon newspaper. He won North Caro lina Press Association prizes with his editorials. He was 1954 chair man of the judging committee for the Sir Walter Raleigh Prize (for fiction) given annually for the North Carolina Literary and His torical Society, and next year was chairman of the North Carolina Editorial Writers Conference. Mrs. Mason is the former Frapces Fulton of Walnut Cove. The Masons have one daughter, Fran, a junior at Hollins College, in Virginia. They live at 1412 Trouville Avenue, Norfolk. Children’s Home Society’s Drive Ends January 15 With only 10 days remaining before the end of its annual Christmas Fund Campaign, Jan uary 15, George E. C„ at Greensboro has announced that the largest num ber of contributors in the 60-year history of the Society have re sponded to the appeal. To date, 1,373 contributors have given $48,126 to continue the work of safe adoption by this non-, sectarian service which helped over 600 dependent babies and children during the past year, in 97 of the 100 counties of the state. To leave no call for helj) unan swered, the Society has sent out an urgent plea for $11,874 in con tributions to complete its goal of $60,000.
