THEATRE
Climaxing her meteoric rise to
stardom, Diane McBain is cast in
the title role of Warner Bros.’
production of Erskine Caldwell’s
“Claudelle Inglish,” opening Sun
day at the Sunrise Theatre, op
posite Arthur Kennedy, Con
stance Ford, Will Hutchins and
Claude Akins. Miss McBain stars
as the beautiful daughter of a
tenant farmer who brings tragedy
to her neighbors, her family and
herself with her wanton behavior
after she has been jilted by the
young man to whom she was en
gaged.
Produced by Leonard Freeman,
who also wrote the screenplay,
“Claudelle Ingish” was directed
by Gordon Douglas and filmed
near Stockton, California, where
the terrain approximated that o^
the original Georgia setting of
the story.
Caldwell is America’s best-sell
ing author. More copies of his
books—“Claudelle Ingish” was his
37th novel—have been sold than
those of any other author.
Director Gordon Douglas fle^-
in a southern accent for Miss Mc
Bain during the filming of thr
picture. The accent came in the
form of an hour tape of a conver
sation between a Georgia lawyer,
a woman bank clerk and a libra
rian. The tape was designed as e
guide to assure an authpn+'
southern accent for Miss McBain,
who also worked with Ken Rose;
a dialogue director specializing in
southern accents.
