THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 1962 THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina Coltrane, Ballentine to Speak During Meeting of N. C. Peach Growers Society T. Clyde Auman, president of the North Carolina Mutual Peach Growers Society, announces that D. S. Coltrane, chairman of the State Advisory Budget Commis sion and L. Y. Ballentine, com missioner of agriculture, will speak at the annual meeting of the Mutual Peach Society to be held Tuesday January 23. The program will begin at 9 a. m. at the Sandhills Peach Re search Station near Jackson Springs with a discussion on peach production and peach dis eases, and a movie on mechanical harvesting of peaches. The morn ing session will conclude with a tour of the orchards at the re search station. Mr. Coltrane will address the group at lunch. A former com missioner of agriculture, director of the budget and director of ad ministration, he will review what the State has done to support peach research. The afternoon program will in clude a tour of commercial ex hibits and demonstrations of or chard equipment which will be on display. This will give the commercial representatives an op portunity to talk with the indiv idual growers. A business session will conclude the afternoon pro gram. Commissioner Ballentine will speak at the annual banquet at which “pioneer” peach growers of the 1910-1920 period will be guests. There are 28 of these growers. It is hoped that all these pioneer peach growers and their wives will be able to attend the dinner and program beginning at 6:30 p. m. in the East Montgom ery High School Cafeteria be tween Candor and Biscoe. Otto Edwards Dies in Alabama Otto Edwards of Jacksonville, Ala., a former resident of South ern Pines, died unexpectedly in his sleep January 9, according to information sent to The Pilot. For several years after World War II, Mr. Edwards and his fam ily livecf in Southern Pines, while he was working at Fort Bragg. For the past six years, he has had a similar position at Fort McClel land, near Jacksonville, Ala. When the family lived in South ern Pines, the children attended local schools. The family attend ed the First Baptist Church here. Surviving are Mr. Edwards’s wife, Mary; his mother, sister and four children, Anna Graham, Car olyn, James and John. More than 25 million out-of- state visitors to North Carolina in 1961 set a new travel record for the Variety Vacationland State, the Department of Conser vation and Development announc ed in a year-end summary of the State’s third largest industry. Premeasurement Rates Set; Other ASCS News Told By WALTER I. FIELDS ASCS Office Manager The Moore County Committee has set the following rates for premeasurenient in 1962: tobacco $3.00 plus $1.25 per acre with a minimum of $9.25 per farm; all other crops such as cotton and di verted acreage, $3.00 plus 80 cents per acre with a minimum of $9.25. The final date for requesting premeasurement has been set as February 15, or whenever 200 re quests have been filed. New Grower Allotment The deadline for accepting an applicatidn for a 1962 “New Grower” tobacco or cotton allot ment is February 15. Grain Price Support 'The last day for obtaining a Price Support Loan on most 1961 crop grains and related crops will be January 31. Corn loans may be available through February 28. Colton Acreage Allotted cotton acreage must be either planted or released if his tory acreage is to be preserved. If the allotment is not going to be planted this year, it should be released to the county committee in order that it may be reappor tioned to other farmers in the county requesting additional acreage and hold in Moore Coun ty the cotton allotment that now is ours. Anyone desiring to make a re quest for additional cotton acre age for 1962, from released acre age should make his application at the ASCS county office in Car thage as early as possible. If your request is filed early then the committee will be in a position to know the situation on acreage available and possibly be able to get additional acreage from the state office is justified.
