watercolors by Roger Deering, now being shown at a Key
West, Fla., galleiy. Three other watercolors of Sandhills scenes
are included in the exhibition which will run through February
25.
Deering Paintings Exhibited at Key
W^t, Fla.; Classes to Open Monday
A group of about 20 paintings
by Roger Deering, the Kenne-
bunkport, Maine, artist who has
a winter gallery and studio on
Midland Road, between Southern
Pines and Pinehurst, are on ex
hibition, through February 25, at
the Martello Gallery and Museum
in Key West, Fla.
Primarily an exhibition of
watercolors, the group contains
only two oils. Four of the paint
ings are of Sandhills scenes and
there are other subjects, land
scapes and marines, from Maine
and Massachusetts.
Exhibited simultaneously at the
large Key West gallery are sculp
ture by Dorthe Chilcutt and litho
graphs by Stow Wengenroth.
Mr. and Mrs. Deering, who ha ve
been in the Sandhills since De
cember, left Friday for a trip to
Florida where Mr. Deering is
painting in the St. Augustine and
other areas, possibly visiting the
Key West exhibition if time per
mits. ,
They will return to the Sand
hills in time for Mr. Deering to
open his painting classes for
adults at the Carolina Hotel, Pine
hurst, Monday, February 5, to
continue on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday mornings, during Feb
ruary and March. Opening of the
artist’s outdoor painting, classes
will be announced later, he said.
The gallery on Midland Road
will be opened Tuesday, Feoru-
ary 6, featuring largely oil paint
ings, including local scenes, and
landscapes, street scenes and ma
rines painted in New England.
The public is invited to visit the
gallery.
An oil painting of a Maine
coastal scene, “September Surf,”
by Mr. Deering, was included in
an exhibition of paintings by
members of the Salmagundi Club
in New York City, December 30-
January 19.
Local Boys, Pinehurst Girls Continue
To Lead Moore Basketball Conference

Judy Cameron of Pinehurst
scored 31 points as the Pinehurst
girls downed Vass-Lakeview for
their 12th consecutive victoiy'
Friday of last week. The South
ern Pines boys defeated Highfalls
Tuesday night for their 14th
straight win.
The West End girls gained sec
ond position in the standings
with victories over Highfalls and
Robbins. The Cameron boys, who
are in second position in the boys
standings, collected wins over
Carthage and Aberdeen.
Only six games remain before
the Moore County Basketball
Tournament which is scheduled
to be played at Aberdeen and
Robbins.
Games scheduled for Friday of
this week include: Pinehurst at
Farm Life, Southern Pines at
Robbins, Vass-Lakeview at Car
thage, West End at Cameron,
Westaroore at Aberdeen.
Tuesday of next week: Robbins
will play at Highfalls, Carthage
at Pinehurst, Cameron at South
ern Pines, Aberdeen at Vass-
Lakeview and Westmoore will
visit West End.

Hawks Becomes
Staff Sergeant
Paul H. Hawks, who is head of
the US Army Recruiting Station
in Sanford was recently promoted
to the rank of staff sergeant in
the Regular Army.
Sgt. Hawks has 15 years active
federal military service to his
credit. His awards and service
ribbons include the parachutist
and gliderman badge, Victory
WW II, American Defense, Asiat
ic-Pacific Theatre, and the good
conduct award with four clasps.
He is married to the former
Evola Vernon (a classmate from
Mount Airy) and they live at 511
Goldston Blvd. in Sanford. Their
three children are Ann, age 13;
Greg, age 12; and Mike, age 7
years.

Funeral services were held Fri
day afternoon at Cypress Presby
terian Church in Little River
township for Stanley Edwin Dar
rach, 49, of Route 2, Cameron,
who died Thursday of last week.
The Rev. Owen Norment offi
ciated. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
Mr. Darrach is survived by five
sisters, Mrs. George Rogers of
Route 2, Cameron, Mrs. Mary
Kate Thomas of Route 6, Sanford,
Mrs. C. G. Hart of Route 2, Cam
eron, Mrs. Preston Smith of Con
cord and Mrs. G. W. Faulk of
