GOV. SANFORD IMPRESSED BY VISIT
70 Boys Helped at Lake Waccamaw
(Special To The Weekly News
papers Of Noirth Carolina)
By GOV. TERRY SANFORD
A former nationally-known
football coach, a remarkable
neighborhood spirit, the vision of
civic club members, added togeth
er, have meant a new start and
unexpected opportunities for 70
North Carolina boys.
For five years now, there has
been a place in Columbus County
at Lake Waccamaw known as
Boys Home.
I spent Sunday there.
Boys Home, phisically, is the
old Gault home and two cottages.
But “cottage” is not exactly des
criptive, for each is a twelve-
room, fire proof building, com
plete with kitchen, dining roqm,
bed rooms, living quarters for 16
boys built at a cost of $60,000.00
One was built by the Civitan
Clubs of the State, and the otlrer
by the Lions Club.
Construction on a third cot
tage, which is being donated by
the jaycees of the State, started
in December. A forth cottage has
been projected by the North Ca
rolina Kiwanis Clubs.
Other organizations which are
supporting the Boys Home pro
gram include the North Carolina
Federation of Women’s Clubs, the
North Carolina Pharmaceutical
Association, the Alpha Delta Kap
pa Sorority and various church
groups.
More important than the build
ing of the physical plant is che
building of character of the boys
at the home. A program designed
to meet the needs of each boy is
carried orj under the capable di
rection of R. N. (Rube) McCray,
[who for 15 years coached football
at William & Mary.
The current enrollment at Boys
Home includes students from the
mountains of Buncombe and
Jackson Counties, the cities of the
Piedmont Counties of Mecklen
burg, Forsyth, Guilford, Ala
mance and Durham, and the
towns and farmlands of such
Eastern Counties as Pitt, Lenoir,
Duplin, Bladen, Beaufort, Scot
land, Wayne and Moore.
In all, one fourth of all the
counties of North Carolina are
represented in Boys Home.
Boys are referred to the non
sectarian, non - profit Home
through local Welfare Depart
ments and Juvenile Courts. The
boys are not assigned to the Home
for definite periods of time. They
may stay until they are adjusted.
The community is lending its
full support to Mr. McCary and
his staff in this effort.
In walking across the campus
and in talking with the students
you can see that Boys Home is
helping build these boys into
self-respecting and self-support
ing citizens.'

Teachers Scholarship Loan, De
partment of Public Instruction,
Raleigh, North Carolina.
This scholarship-loan program
was enacted by the 1957 Legisla
ture, providing 300 scholarship-
loans annually of $350 each. This
was increased to 450 awards by
the 1961 Legislature. Any resi
dent of North Carolina who is
interested in preparing to teach
in the public schools of the State
is eligible to apply, with priority
being given to high school seniors.
In making the awards, considera
tion is given to such factors and
circirmstances as aptitude, pur
posefulness, scholarship, charac
ter, financial ^eed, and areas or
subjects in' wmch the demand for
teachers is greatest.
A recipient receiving the award
for four years would be obligated
to teach in the North Carolina
public schools for four years. If
for some acceptable reason the
teaching obligation is not com
pleted, repayment must be made
in cash.
At present, 1,300 prospective
teachers are enrolled in 48 North
Carolina colleges as recipients of
this financial aid. Three hundred
seventy-one public school teachers
currently teaching in North Car
olina received' aid through this
program, with two hundred twen
