MORE WOOD
The South is growing more
wood than is being used. For ex
ample, in the period from 1935
through 1960, wood-using indus
tries consumed 147 billion cubic
feet. Yet the region’s forests still
contain 131 billion cubic feet of
wood, as compared to 120 cubic
feet in 1935, showing a gain of
nine per cent while that mam
moth harvest was taking place.

The construction of farm ponds
continues to be a major conser
vation activity in Moore County.
In the Cameron area, ponds have
been constructed recently by
Frank Comer, Emery Brown, Wil
bur Phillips and Luther McPher
son, and one jointly by Paul
Thomas and L. C. Thomas. In the
Carthage'area, ponds have been
constructed by H. B. Short, W.
V. Fisher and Thomas Rogan—
on the late Walter McCaskill
farm. All of these ponds will be
used as reservoirs for the irriga
tion of tobacco. They vary in
size from one-half acre to two
acres surface.
Voit Gilmore planted 39,000
pine seedings early this month
on his tree farm near Southern
Pines. About 113 acres have been
planted within the last two years
on this'farm.
Conservation plans for the en
tire farm have been made recently
by N. C. Cagle, Carthage, and
Herbert McCaskill, Route 1, Rob
bins. Mr. McCaskill planted about
seven acres to peas and milo,
much of this area being in the
right-of-way of power and tele
phone lines through woodland.
This planting was made to at
tract game birds to his farm. He
thinks it was very successful.
S. H. Oliver, near Whispering
Pines, has a very pretty example
of stripcropping on a four-acre
field.
George Fishel, Jackson Springs,
is preparing for a dry summer, He
comipleted a pond in December
and has recently acquired an ir
rigation system. George Johnson,
Route 1, Cameron says his pond
paid off without using a drop of
water from it last summer. With
water available he was not alarm
ed to put plenty of fertilizer un
der his tobacco.
