Page FOURTEEN THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 1962 Nighthawk Situation Under Control; Let’s Take A Look At The Bluebirds The Pilot and many readers have been disturbed at the ab sence of nighthawks, those swooping jets with their cutback, spotted wings. The interest was augmented by a letter from Henry W. Ken dall, editor of the Greensboro Daily News, who picked up some comment from The Pilot corre spondence. Author Naturalist Glen Rounds, Bird Watcher Mary WHoje you - SEttVicg > ARPWHO GtWIlHC FORD SERVICE { ^ SQWmf FOOD F SERVICE "Y { Mister PART-icular saysTr. Your Ford’s always near friends! Wintyen and others got into the act and, to date, the score seems to be more favorable to night- hawks than at first seemed likeljf: There ARB some around these parts, though, it is gener ally (jonceded, not nearly as many as there used to be. (Due to what? Most folks say: insecticide spray ing). Now comes another bird man, H. R. MacFadyen, writing to the Greensborp editor and Mr. Mac Fadyen is all jittery over the bluebird situation. And we don’t blame him. Bluebirds, traditional harbingers of spring, are about the most welcome of aU bird travelers. Mr. MacFadyen believes they have become decidedly scarce and offers a variety of sinister reasons. Here they are, as reprint ed from his letter to the (Greens boro paper, with his good ideeis of what folks can do about it: “The reason: Hard Winters, in numerable prowling cats, no place to nest. We cannot change the weather to get rid of the cats but we can change the disastrous nesting situation. We can pro vide bird boxes. These friendly birds like to nest in woodpecker holes in dead trees and fence posts. Is there any such bluebird home on your place? Make a bird box. Nail it to a one by four and nail it to a fence post out in the open. Lift it up about two or three feet above the post. Coyer this space with tin or some metal. This would stop the cats. They can’t climb on metal. . “If you have a shop,'call in the boys and make some boxes. It will take about five feet of 1x6. The back side of the box 9”. The front 6”. The bottom 7”. The sides are set in and nailed between the back and front and the bottom is under all the pieces. The roof piece is 7%" and ought to be bev eled so as to make a good fit. The hole should be in the front from the top and he 1% across. The hole can be bored with a big auger or cut by a band-saw. Bore a hole in the bottom.' Use a 1” narrow butt hinge on the top or lightly nail it on so you can see wHat you have and clean the box after the season. , ‘We have not a day to spare. If the little fellows are going to come they are on the way now. If you have a pair this year or see a bluebird this summer, notify this paper or the writer.” Livestock and poultry feed sales in the Southeast have in creased 13 per cent or more in five of the 13 years prior to 1962. This is a faster gain, percentage- [wise, than for any other area. CLUB BOURBON BOURBON KEMTUCIiir .SIRAIGHT BOUEBON WHISKEY^ An Honored Name Since 1830 .
