The sixteenth running of the Block House Steeplechase Rac^ will take place over the historic Block pouse Course at Tryon on Saturday, April 7. The first race post time is 2 p. m. The day’s big events will be The Block House race itself, two miles over brush, and The North Carolina Hunt Cup, three miles over timber. Among the four oth er races on the program wiU be something new—^two hurdle races: The Pacolet Plate for maidens and an open event. The Doncaster, each 1 1-2 miles over hurdles. ' The two other events are The Tryon, one mile on the flat, and The Pink Coat race, one-half mile on the flat. The latter is open to any subscriber or member of a recognized Hunt. This is the first race on the program. The grassy, rolling Block House Course is an unusual spot. It runs into two states and three coun ties: Polk Coimty in North Caro lina and Spartanburg and Green ville in South Carolina. The fam ed old Block House, nestled in the center, was for years a place of refuge for the early settlers when the Indians put on the war paint. According to Racing Secretly J. Arthur Reynolds the following trainers are expected to bring horses for this year’s recreation: Dooley Adams, Mickey Walsh, H. C. Baldwin, III, Dick Atkinson, Joe Nash, Burley Cocks, Billy Thomas, Bobby Davis, Mrs. C. E Adams, Forrest Peacock, E. C. Eg- gert and Tommy Dankin. Their entries will be announced short ly. All entries should be sent to Mr. Reynolds in Tryon. Chairman of this years Race Committee is Cary L. Page and the Trophy Chairman is Mrs. Page. The Stewards are Carter P. Brown, Leonard G. Carpenter, Ernst Mahler and Raymond G. Woolfe. Social activities this year in clude a Pre-Race Dinner at Sun- nydale in Tryon at 7 o’clock in the evening on Friday, April 6, and a luncheon on race day at 11:30 a. m. on the Block House lawn. Both events are sponsored by the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club and reservations for these parties, as well as reservations for parking places at the race course, may be made through the I Tryon Riding & Hunt Club, Try- 'on.
