Amerotron League
Bowling Awards
Given at Banquet
The Amerotron Bowling League
held its annual banquet Friday,
March 30, at The Wedge Inn,
'Southern Pines. Presentation of
(trophies and awards were made
by company officials.
The first presentation was
made by Harvey Scherr, com
pany engineer and captain of the
Injuns, who presented a member
of his team, Richard Kemp, with
the Most Improved Bowler award.
Frank Gramelsbach, industrial
relations official for Amerotron,
made the presentation of the
High Game award to Charles Kay
who achieved a 231 game.
Bill Caton, personnel director
for the Robbins and Red Spring
plants, made the presentation of
the High Average award to James
Glasscock who maintained a 170
average for the season.
R. M. Cushman, vice president
of Amerotron, presented the
Cus,hman Trophy to Julian Man-
ess, captain of the Robbins
Snipes, champions again this
lyear. The Cushman Trophy, a
personal trophy given to the lea
gue by Mr. Cushman, must be
won by the same team for three
years to become a permanent pos
session of that team.
High Series award was won by
Carroll Brown with a 580 series
He was unable to attend and pre
sentation was made at a later
date.
Awards for perfect attendance
were made to: Howard Ritter and
Henry Craven, Bobbin Hoods;
Julian Maness and Donald Mor-
phis, Robbins Snipes; Robert
Cash and Lynwood Clarke, Play

Mrs. DeCosla's Pupils
Exhibiting Paintings
An exhibition of oil paintings
by pupils of Mrs. Frank deCosta
has been hung in the art gallery
of the Southern Pines Library to
remain on view this week and
(next week.
All of the pupils are beginners
who took a six weeks course,
istudying three mornings a week.
Paintings of fruit, flowers and
other still-life subpects are in
cluded.
The students whose work is
shown are: Mrs. Roy Grinnell,
Mrs. Allen Woodrow, Mrs. David
L. Morton (painting unsigned),
Mrs. Robert Easley, Mrs. John
Sherry, and Mrs John Pottle.

Mrs. Julia McNeill
Succumbs at 82;
Funeral Saturday
Funeral services for Mrs. Julia
IRumph McNeill,. 82, will be held
at 3 p. m. Saturday at Emmanuel
Episcopal Church, conducted by
the Rev. Martin Caldwell, rector.
Eiurial will be at Union Church
Cemetery, between Vass and Car
thage.
Mrs. McNeill died Wednesday
morning at the Pinehurst Conval
escent Home where she had been
a resident for nearly seven years,
following the death of her hus
band, William H. McNeill, local
businessman, in August, 1955.
Mrs. McNeill was born at
Rome, Ga., January 28, 1880, and
moved with her family at an
early age to Birmingham, Ala.,
where she grew up. She did sec
retarial work in New York City
for a number of years. She and
Mr. McNeill were married Feb
ruary 24, 1921, living at Lake-
view until the early 1930’s when
they moved to Southern Pines.
A member of Emmanuel Epis
copal Church, Mrs. McNeill was
formerly active in church work.
She sang in the church’s choir for
many years.
Her only immediate survivors
are three sisters. Miss Kate
Rumph and Mrs. Joe E. Carter,
both of Birmingham, Ala., and
Mrs. J. S. McGee of Eutaw, Ala.
Among several surviving nieces
and nephews are two nieces liv
ing at Sanford, Mrs,. Florence
Olmsted and Mrs. Althea Dickin-

Bloodmobile to Visit
Chairmen and community
workers from the Vass-Lakeview,
Cameron, and rural areas are urg-i
ed to attend a meeting at the
Vass Community House, Thurs
day, April 5, at 7:30 p. m. Dr. R.
J. Dougherty, chairman for the
visit, and General Hauser, gen
eral chairman of the Bloodmobile
will be present to make detailed
preparations for the visit, which
is scheduled for April 17, at the
Vass-Lakeview Gymnatorium.
Minstrel Show
The Vass Volunteer Fire De
partment will sponsor a minstrel
show on Friday night, April 6, at
7:30 p. m. in the Vass-Lakeview
School Auditorium.
Woman's Club
On Friday, April 13, the Vass
Woman’s Club will attend a din
ner meeting and tour of Samar-
cand Manor. Plans are to leave
at 4:30 p. m.

party at her home Saturday
afternoon. Guests present to help
celebrate the surprise occasion
were members of the Brownie
Troop. Refreshments of cake, ice
cream, chocolate bunnies and
cold drinks were enjoyed.
Kathy Danley, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Bturton Danley, celebra
ted her seventh birthday at a
party given by her mother in her
home Saturday afternoon. Re
freshments of ice cream, cake,
potato chips, and cold drinks were
served the 16 guests present.

Pinehurst, recently graduated
from the Seventh U. S. Army
Non-Commissioned Officer Acad
emy in Bad Tolz, Germany.
Specialist Hinton received four
weeks of training in various mil
itary subjects with emphasis on
leadership and combat tactics. The
purpose of the academy is to
broaden the soldier’s professional
knowledge and to instill him with
the self-confidence and sense of
responsibility required of a ca
pable leader.
Hinton, a personnel specialist
in the 93rd Signal Battalion’s
Headquarters Company in Hanau,
entered the Army in February,
1961, and completed basic train
ing at Fort Jackson, S. C., before
arriving overseas on this tour of
duty. The 226-year-old soldier is
a 1953 graduate of Andrew Jack-
son High School in Jacksonville
and attended the University of
Florida in Gainesville. His par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie S. Hin
ton, live on Route 2, Jacksonville.
Dr. Staples Will
Preach Sunday at
Brownson Church
Dr. George Ervin Staples, chap
lain of Davidson College at Dav
idson, will conduct the 11 a. m.
service at Brownson Memorial
Presbyterian Church Sunday.
The church is having a series
of guest ministers during April.
Dr. E. C. Scott, interim minister
at the chtirch for six months, has
returned to his home at Atlanta,
Ga.
Dr. Staples has been chaplain
at Davidson since 1956 and was
previously minister of Highland
Presbyterian Church, Winston-
Salem for seven years.
A veteran of Army infantry
combat service in the Pacific
theatre in World War II, he holds
the Silver Star for gallantry in
action and other decorations. He
iis a graduate of Presbyterian Col
lege, Clinton, S. C., and did post
graduate study, receiving the B.
D., Th. M. and Th. D. degrees, at
Richmond. Va, New York City
and the Universities of Texas and
Wisconsin.
Booker to Have
Radio Program
W. M. Booker, proprietor of
Landscapes, local landscaping
(service, has contracted to do a
15-minute program on gardening
and allied fields on Radio Station
WWGP, Sanford, at 9:30 a. m.
each Saturday, it was announced
this week by the station.
Mr. Booker, a N. C. State Cbl-
lege graduate with a B. S. degree
;in horticulture, is a Southern
Pines resident. His program, to
be sponsored by Hester Wilson
Lawn and Garden Center of San
ford, will deal with gardening
problems in the soils and climate
of this area. Letters from listen
ers will be invited and used on
the program, the announcement
said.
Friday Final Day to
Request Cotton Acreage
The date for requesting addi
tional cotton acreage from re
leased acreage has been extend
ed through April 6, in aU coun
ties in North Carolina. The date
by which farmers could release
their acreage was not extended
beyond March 23.
All farmers desiring to plant
additional cotton this year must
contact the ASCS office in Car
thage and file the necessary re
quest form by close of business
April 6.
Association For Retarded Children Will
Present First Camp Scholarship in ’62
A meeting of the Moore and
Hoke County Association for Re
tarded Children was held Thurs
day evening at the office of Dr.
Emily Tufts. Mrs. Donald R.
Scott, of Southern Pines, presi
dent presided.
Mrs. George C. Davis and Mrs.
Margery Marshall were appointed
by the president to head the
Scholarship Award Committee
which will present its first
scholarship to a child from the
Moore and Hoke County area to
attend Camp Pamlico near Wash
ington, N. C., this summer.
The Association wishes to thank
(interested people and friends in
this area, who responded to the
recent appeal for memberships,
with their financial and personal
support.
A letter was read from Mrs.
Vida L. Bryant, state executive
secretary informing that WiRAL-
TV of Raleigh has made an hour-
long film on Retardation. People
iin this area are urged to watch
the program at 10 p. m. April 13.
An appeal from the O’Berry
School at Goldsboro was read. Re
quests for furniture, draperies
and clothing was made. Members
will bring articles to the next
meeting which will be held at the
office of Dr. Tufts April 10.
Plans are being mare for the
second annual Scholarship bridge
party to be held this spring. Over
200 players participated last year,
resulting in the award of two
teacher scholarships to Moore
County teachers.
