Lockie Parker Has Family Visiting Here This Week Miss Lockie Parker has been entertaining members of her fam ily this past w'leekend. “Full to bursting” was the small house on Ridge street with the folks stop ping off on their way home from Florida. The family, who all live in Buf falo, N. Y., include Mr. and Mrs. Kerr Parker, their son, Kerr, Jr. and his wife and two children. Southern Pines is getting to be an annual stop coming or going for this group who travel to Flor ida winters to escape the cold of Buffalo and enjoy their boat, pnoored at Fort Lauderdale. VFW Auxiliary Will Give Easter Gifts to Children at McCain The ^TW Auxiliary of John Boyd Post 7318 held its regular meeting Wednesday, March 22, with President Louise Crain pre siding. 'The Auxiliary project of Easter favors for the children at Mc Cain Sanatorium was reported well underway. Each child is to be given an individual gift. A sew-bake sale will be held in May and the Auxiliary also plans a party at the Veterans Adminis tration Hospital in Fayetteville, May 18. MISS ANN CREED, whose engagement to Donald Lee Burney is announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond W. Creed of Pinedene. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Burney of Pine Grove Road. Miss Creed, a graduate of Aberdeen High School, is employed by J. D. Arey & Company of Aberdeen. Mr. Burney graduated from Southern Pines High School and attended Richmond Professional Institute and is also employed by the J. D. Arey Company. They plan a June 17 wedding. NIGHT Dogwood Grove Bake Sale Proceeds Are Donated to Charities At the regular meeting t>f Dog wood Grove 253 of the Supreme Forest Woodmen Circle, held re cently, plans were made to par ticipate in the flag sales drive to help make sure that every busi ness and home in the county will be flying a flag on Memorial Day, May 30. The Circle sponsored a bake sale with all proceeds donated to the heart and cancer drives. Also the Circle made a contribution to ithe March of Dimes. At the close of the ritualistic meeting, refreshments were serv ed by Mrs. Flora Bowers and Mrs. Vera Warner. Miss Ethel Johnson And Army Officer Wed in California Miss Ethel Johnson of Marietta, Ga. and Capt. Melton H. Kunze were married March 24 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Monterey, Calif. Miss Johnson is the daughter of Oscar Johnson of Southern Pines, and the late Mrs. Johnson. She is a sister of Melvin O. and Richard W. Johnson and of Mrs. R. W. Howard, all of Southern Pines. Capt. Kunze is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Kunze of Waco, Texas. He has been sta tioned at Fort Bragg but is pres ently taking the Vietnamese Course of the Army Language iSchool at the Presidio in Monte rey and will leave for a year’s tour of duty in Vietnam, May 1. During his absence, his wife will return to her job with the personnel division of Dobbins AFB in Marietta. May Fashion Show Planned by Women’s Club of St. Anthony’s At their April business meeting, St. Anthony’s Women’s Guild made plans for their coming Fashion Show, to be presented May 9 in the St. Anthony's School Auditorium. The following committee chair men were appointed: Mrs. Harry P. McStravick, arrangements; Mrs. Sarah Lorenson, tickets; Rosalie Garris, decorations; Mrs. McKay, refreshments; Mrs. John G. Girl Scout Troop 109 to Present Play on April 15 Girl Scout Troop 109 went to the Pinehurst Playhouse on March 17 to see “The Boy Friend.” They were accompanied by their mothers. The Troop is planning to give a play, “The Gift Horse,” on April 15 at 7 p.m, at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. Two Gnatcatcher Nests Seen by Local Bird Club at Pinebluff Lake Thirteen people from the South ern Pines Bird Club went to Pine- bluff Lake last Friday morning, where, they saw the dainty nest of the blue-gray gnatcatcher, used last year, and also, one of the previous year. Both nests had been watched, and there are ex pectations that the same pair of birds will return to the vicinity again. A swamp sparrow and yellow- throat were seen, and a list of 32 species was made during the morning. Persons interested in birds are cordially invited to meet at head quarters, 160 South Bennett Street, at 9:30 a. m. on Fridays. Lutheran Church Women Attend Meet In Fayetteville Mrs. N. Earl Townsend, mis sionary on furlough from Argen tina, was the principal speaker at Ithe Eastern Conference meeting of the United Lutheran Church Women of North Carolina at St James Lutheran Church, Fay etteville, March 24. A Columbia, S. C. native, Mrs. Townsend is, a graduate Of Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory where her father. Dr. F. Grover Morgan, was a professor. She and her hus band went to Argentina in 1949 and completed two terms in that field. Her husband is presently di rector of Evangelism and Litera ture for the Lutheran Church in Argentina.
