Carol Parker of
Cameron School
Is Top Speller
“Writhed” was the winning
word that made Carol Parker of
Cameron School the champion
speller of the Moore County Ele
mentary Schools in the annual
contest held Saturday. Standing
up against 10 opponents from
throu^out the coimty, Carol nev
er wavered in her consistent mas
tery of the words that were pro
nounced to her. When the contest
was narrowed to the two final
ists, Gail Page, who came in sec
ond as the runner-up, missed
“wraith.” Gail is from the Rob
bins Graded School.
Carol spelled that word correct
ly and then the new word which
made her champion.
The daughter of Mrs. Roland
Ferguson of Vass, Carol will spell
in the State finals Saturday, May
5, in Winston-Salem, when 42
school systems will take part.
Each student in the county
Ispelling event was presented an
lengraved pen and a Certificate
Award of Merit from his individ
ual school. Words given to the
contestants were taken from a
2,500-word practice book, “Words,
of the Champions,” which con
tains many easy and difficult
words.
Taking part in the spelling bee
were elementary students in
schools of the county system
which includes all schools of the
county except those of the Sotuh-
ern Pines and Pinehurst separate
administrative units.
