Hodgkins, president and chairman of the board of the Cit izens Bank and Trust Company of Southern Pines, is a native of Maine who joined the bank as cashier in 1935. He was then elected president in 1940; and be came chairman of the board in 1942. He has since served contin uously in the latter two offices, in direct, active charge of the bank’s operations. Mr. Hodgkins came to Southern Pines from Albany, N. Y., where he had been with the Beconstruc- ition Finance Corporation. Growth of the bank under the leadership of Mr. Hodgkins has been steady and sub-stantial. De posits first reached $1 million ip 1940, increasing to $3,600,000 in 1955 and to $0,100,000 in 1961. The first report of the Citizens Bank for 1907, listed deposits of $41,000. The bank president has long been active in the N. C. Bankers Association, having been a group chairman and held other offices. Throughout his residence in Southern Pines, he has been ex- tiemely active in civic and church work. He is chairman of the Southern Pines school board and has been a member of the board about 25 years. He is a member of the board of directors of Moore Mem orial Hospital and a former pres ident of that institution. He is receiving treasurer for the Epis copal Home for the Ageing, to be built here soon, and a member of the vestry of Emmanuel Church. He is a former president of the Sandhills Kiwanis Club. N. L. HODGKINS President For many years Mr. Hodgkins was active in Boy Scouting, serv ing as Moore District Chairman and president of the 12-cOunty Occoneechee Council, winning the high Silver Beaver award for Scouting leadership. Mr. Hodgkins was married, in 1925 to Mary Abraham, member of a family associated with South ern Pines since 1912. Their three sons are Norris L. Hodgkins, Jr., executive vice president of the Citizens Bank; Lewis, an Episco pal minister at Anchorage, Alas ka; and George, who recently re signed as an officer of the bank to become vice president of a new small business investment company n.sar Los Angeles, Calif. E. Earl Hubbard E. Earl Hubbard, vice president of the Citizens Bank and Trust Co., will be the bank officer in charge of the new South Broad Street Drive-In Office which is to have its formal opening Mon day afternoon. Mr. Hubbard has been with the bank since 1955, when he was ap pointed assistant cashier. He was later promoted to vice president and was elected to the board of directors in January of this year. A native of St^man in this state, Mr. Hubbard s<9rved with the Marine Corps in World War II and then attended Duke Uni versity, Durham, graduating in 1950. He was a representative of the U. S. Internal Revenue Serv ice, in charge of a Southern Pines office of the Service, before be coming associated with the bank. Mr. Hubbard is chairman of the board of trustees of the Southern Pines Methodist Church and is a former chairman of the Moore County Red Cross chapter and former president of the local Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. He has been active in Boy Scout adult leadership posts. Mr. Hubbard was the 1960 win ner of the Distinguished Service Award of the Southern Pines Jay- cees, recognizing his civic activity and business accomplishments. In E. Southern Pines Norris L Hodgkins, Jr. Coming to the Citizens Bank and Trust Company in 1949 as assistant to the president, alter two years with the Chase Man hattan Bank in New York City, Norris L. Hodgkins Jr., became executive vice president in 1954 and was elected to the board of directors in 1955. A native of Southern Pines and son of the bank’s president, he is a 1943 graduate of Southern Pines High School and was graduated from, Duke University, Durh£Lm, in 1947. He served in the Navy two years while a student at Duke. Mr. Hodgkins was graduated in in 1958 from the Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University in New Jersey, attending a sum mer course there for three years, along with home study and com pletion of a thesis in the third year. He is active in the Young Bankers Division of the N. C. Bankers Association, of which he is second vice 'president, and m 1^' w; has served as group chairman for ithe organization in a territory of seven counties. Active in civic affairs, Mr. Hodgkins is a member and former chairman of the Southern Pines Industrial Committee, is president of the Moore County Historical Association and is a director of the Sandhills Kiwanis Club. He w'as the first winner, in 1958, of the Distinguished Service Award NORRIS L. HODGKINS. JR. Exec. He is a former president of the Ja5'oee3, the Moore County Tu berculosis Association and the Sandhills Music Association, and is a deacon in Brownson Memor ial Presbyterian Church. Bowman, vice president and cashier of the Citizens Bank and Trust Company, came to the bank in 1949 as cashier, alter ser vice as an officer with the Branch Banking and Trust Company of New Bern. He was elected vice president in 1954. A member of St. Anthony’s Church and the Southern Pines Lions Club, he is active in the local Elks Lodge. For many years he has served as local or county treasurer of various eharitabte and civic financial campaigns, in cluding the March of Dimes of the National Foundation and the Heart Fund. The bank officer and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Bowman, live on Orchard Road. They have two daughters, Mrs. Morris Hitson of Southern Pines and Mrs. Helen Tyson of New Bern; and a son, Charles H. Bowman, Jr., who is teaching at Portsmouth, Va. C. H. BOWMAN Vice President and Cashier Billy G. McKenzie Billy G. McKenzie, assistant vice president, is the most recent ly appointed officer of the Citi zens Bank and Trust Co., assum ing his duties with the bank April 1. He is one of two officers as signed to the new South Broad Street Drive-In Branch of the Bank which will hold its open house Monday from 4 to 9 p. m. A native of the Sandhills, Mr. I McKenzie had 11 years of experi- | ence with the Carolina Bank, at its Pinehurst and West End of fices, before coming to the Citi zens Bank. A veteran of combat service with the Marines in World War I II, he has been active in civic and community affairs at Pinehurst. They have two sons, 10 and 8 years old. 18 Persons Associated With Citizens Bank Operations in Southern Pines Directors Supervise Operation A board of 15 directors super vises operations of the Citizens Bank and Trust Company of Southern Pines. Officers of the bank on the board are N. L. Hodgkins, presi dent, who has been chairman of the board since 1942; Norris L. Hodgkins, Jr., executive vice president, who has been a mem ber of the board since 1955; and E. Earl Hubbard, vice president, who was elected to the board in January of this year. Personal information about the three officers who are directors will be found in separate stories, in connection with today’s an nouncement of opening of the bank’s new South Broad Street Drive-In Office on Monday of next week. Other members of the board of directors are: John C. Barron, retired busi nessman who joined the board in 1941, and has resided for many years in Southern Pines. Eighteen persons — including officers, tellers, office personnel and others—are associated with the Citizens Bank and Trust Company of Southern Pines. Five of the 18 will be assigned to the new South Broad Street Drive- In Office which will have its for mal opening Monday. At the new South Broad Street Office will be: Vice President Earl Hubbard who will be in charge of the new office, also heading the install ment loan operations for the en tire bank. Billy G. Howarth, district sales manager for the Carolina Power & Light Co. and former longtime chairman of the Southern Pines school board, who also joined the board of directors in 1941, one month after Mr. Barron, making him the third longest-serving member of the board. George Pottle, elected a direc tor in 1950, is proprietor of .the Hollywood Hotel, a residence ho tel for senior citizens, which has been owned and operated as a hotel in Southern Pines by three generations of his family. D. A. Blue, Jr., a director since 1956, who for many years has been a partner in operation of the Powell Funeral Home here and has been active in civic and charitable organizations. Eight members of the board elected in January, 1961, are: Robert M. Cushman, executive vice president of the Amerotron Corporation, chairman of the Moore County Industrial Com mittee, active in numerous civic and charitable endeavors and in the Church of Wide Fellowship. Dr. Joseph S. Hiatt, Jr., physi cian who has practiced here for nearly 10 years, president of the Moore County 'Tuberculosis Asso ciation and active in the South ern Pines Methodist Church which he helped to organize and found. James D. Hobbs who is associ ated with the Occidental Life In surance Co. and has interests in Resort Realty and Insurance Co. of Southern Pines and Pinehurst- Sandhills Insurance Agency of Pinehurst. He is mayor pro-tem of Southern Pines. Dr. R. M. McMillan, physician who has practiced here since World War 11. A native of the Sandhills, he is a deacon in Brownson Memorial Presbyteri an Church. He was one of the founders and first president of the East Southern Pines Parent- Teacher Association. Dr. J. I. Neal, a partner in oper ation of the Sandhill Veterinary Hospital which he founded some 30 years ago. He is a past presi dent of the North Carolina Veter inary Medical Society, a state wide professional organization. R. F. Hoke Pollock, attorney who has practiced here since World War II, partner in the firm. Pollock and Fullenwider. He is a colonel in the Army Reserve, a former senior warden of Em manuel Episcopal Church and a past president of the Sandhills Kiwanis Club. William P. Saunders, retired textile manufacturing executive, former director of the N, C. De partment of Conservation and Development, and currently gen eral chairman of the building fund drive of Moore Memorial Hospital and an elder in Brown son Memorial Presbyterian Church. Edwin W. Smail, president of the United Telephone Company of the Carolinas, Inc., a firm with headquarters in Southern Pines operating numerous telephone exchanges in North and South Carolina. He is active in the Southern Pines Elks Lodge and ■in various civic undertakings. Directors of the bank meet in a board room on the second floor of the main office of the bank on N. W.
