How ever, don’t overtook some other important things. These include soil texture and drainage, differ ences in varieties, the effect of your rotation or cropping system, the quality of tobacco that is in demand, your past experience, and placement of fertilizer away from the roots of newly set plants. Soil Tests Have soil in each of your fields tested every two to four years. This will show the fertility level of your soil. The Soil Testing Di vision of the N. C. Department of Agrculture, Raleigh, wiU suggest the analysis and rate of preplant fertilizer for you to use. You will also be given a range in rate of nitrogen sidedressinjg. If your soil needs additional potassium, the Soil Testing Divi sion will give you a suggested rate. For soils testing low or very low in phosphorus a recommenda tion for a broadcast application will be given. Depth of Topsoil Depth of topsoil refers to the distance from the surface of your soil to the clay. You should con sider also the coarsenes of your soil. The deeper and coarser the topsoil, the more fertilizer you will probably need for your to bacco. Use a shovel and a yardstick to examine soil at a number of loca tions in the field to determine average depth down to the clay. Make a record of the depth of topsoil for each field for future reference. We County Agents can assist and explain how to deter mine the depth of top soil. Amount of Rcunfall The amount of water that soaks into your soil after applying the suggested fertilizer will deter mine how much nitrogen and pot ash you will need as a side-dress ing. Heavy, slow rains may leach nitrogen and potash below the active root zone. Heavy fast rains may cause surface erosion, loss of fertility, and loss of part of the rain by run off. A rain gauge should be part of your farm equipment. Use it to measure the rainfall; (!) Estimate the amount of each rain and irri gation that runs off, (2) the amoimt that soaks into the soil.
