Nicholson) Alleged Whiskey Still Owner, Operator Arrested Between Glendon and Putnam It appeared to be an abandoned chicken house, but roosting in side was found a complete still, fired up and running, with an operator, when ABC raiders and federal agents visited it last Thursday morning. The tank-type still of 45-gallon capacity, with jars, mash and other trimmings occupied one end of the poultry house some 350 feet in length, within sight of a farmhouse between Glendon and Putnam. The ingeniously built distillery received water from a pipe ap parently placed there some time ago for the chickens, running the length of the poultry house, with water pumped by electricity from a pond behind the farmhouse. Arrested were James Burlin Hussejr, 37, of Carthage, Route 1, owner of the farmhouse, the poutry house and pond; also Colon Clegg, an elder ly Negro, found on the scene operating the still. Destroyed with the still were nine and a half gallons of whiskey and 45 gallons of mash. The arrested men made $500 bond each set by the U. S. Com missioner at Rockingham, for their appearance there at the September term of federal court. Hussey reportedly has no previous record of whiskey law violations, said Chief Moore County ABC Officer C. A. McCallum, but Clegg was characterized as “an old of fender.” Taking part in the raid were Moore ABC Officers McCallum, June Cockman and Ed Floyd, and three agents from the federal ATTD office at Rockingham.
