And some people are proposing that billions more in taxes be spent for the same purpose. • They are proposing, for instance, that the federal government build electric power plants and power lines with money from you and other taxpayers. Opening Tuesday and continuing through today, the schedule of the conference, pro moted by the North Carolina State Nursing Association, covers all aspects of disaster emergency nursing and hospital care. Special features of the study include: technical aspects of the care of mass casualties, with special attention to the treatment of burns, psychological and trau matic injuries and respiratory problems. A film centering around the after-effects of the Hiroshi ma and Nagasaki bombings and the medical care of the sunuvors will be shown. The final session will feature a demonstration of fire fighting and mass hospital evacuation carried out by the Wilmington Fire Department and student nurses of James Walker Hospital. In describing the course which the local nurses are attending, Mrs. K. A. McLeod, director of nurses at Moore Memorial, em phasized that the chief aim of the conference is to promote aware ness among nurses and allied hos pital personnel of the tremen dous responsibilities they must be Page eleven prepared to assume in the event of sudden mass disaster. “This could be any great dis aster,” Mrs. McLeod said, “not necessarily the kind of thing we may all have in mind these days. We want to prepare ourselves and also we hope by this confer ence to initiate creative planning in whatever nurses may be called on to do.” Research has brought about changes in shrimp fishing regula tions which have increased in come of North Carolina shrimp fishermen by at least foim million dollars in the past eight years.
