THEATRE SUNRISE Following in the tradition of “The Good Earth,” another Peari S. Buck story has been transfer red successfully to 4he screen in Leo McCarey’s epic of faith, cour age, innocence and beauty, “Satan Never Sleeps.” The 20th Century- Fox CinemaScope-DeLuxe Color drama, set in China of today, stars William Holden, France Nuyen and Clifton Webb and arrives Sunday at the Sunrise Theatre. This turbulent story describes the unique relationship between two priests and a young Chinese maiden who takes refuge in their mission. Since these men of the cloth represent freedom and love to the poor villagers of Kwang- tung, they are tortured, ridiculed and shamed in attempts to make them forsake their faith. Director Leo McCarey, who wiU be rememhsred for the award winning “The Bells of St. Mary’s” and “Going My Way,” has fash ioned an authentic, stark human drama of conflict. Academy Award winner Wil liam Holden, making his fifth film with an Oriental locale, stars as the young Father O’Banion who gains a deeper understand ing of his vows, while lovely France Nuyen, who scored in the screen version of Rodgers and Hammersteln’s “South Pacific,” portrays Siu-Lan, a young girl serrehing. for the meaning of love. Veteran actor Clifton Webb makes a sharp departure from his usual witty portrayals (remember Mr. Belvedere?) and appears as the defiant and courageous Father Bovard.
