Team In Duplicate
Play At Carolina
The nearly unbeatable husband-
wife combination, the Frank de-
Costas from Southern Pines, took
top bridge honors in Friday’s re
gular duplicate session at the
Carolina Hotel. The Howell Move
ment was used.
In second place were Mrs. Char
les A. Dailey and Miss Margaret
Lavery, both Pinehurst cottagers
and fine players.
Two other Southern Pines play
ers, with their partners, were
third! and fourth place winners—
Miss Katherine Wiley teamed
with Mrs. I. Foy Horton, of
Thomasville, third; and Mrs. Elree
May partnered by Mrs. William
J. Burke of Pinehurst, fourth.
HERB and AWAY
Mrs. A. F. Popham and her
daughter, Mrs. Victoria Mesick,
last week returned' home follow
ing a visit of several days in
Oxon, Md. with the former’s son,
Louis C. Popham.
Peter W. Darst, who received
his honorable discharge from the
U. S. Marine Corps in October,
after four years’ service, has gone
to Washington, D. C., where he
has a position with an insurance
firm.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Fisher
returned home Sunday after a
stay at Sea Island, Ga.
Shelby Stevens, a student at Fish-
burne Academy, was home for
the weekend with his mother,

cently to their place here after
spending the summer at their
family home. Pond Island, Maine.
They also were visitors, en route
home, in Plainfield, N. J.

W. Whitman of Reading, Pa. Mr.
Whitman, who was here for the
weekend, returned to Reading
Sunday.

Miss Ann Rod'dey left Monday
for Staunton Va., where she has
accepted the position as choir
director for the First Presbyterian
Church.
Back from the summer at their
place in Hamilton Mass., are Mr.
and! Mrs. Q. A. Shaw McKean
and their sons, Robbie and David.
Bishop and Mrs. Louis C. Mel-
cher drove to Sullivan’s Island,
S. C. Sunday afternoon where
the Bishop officiated at the chris
tening of their granddaughter,
Mary Jo, seven w.sek old daugh
ter of the Rev. and Mrs. L. C.
Melcher, Jr. The infant was bap
tized in the Church of the Holy
Cross, of which her father is rec
tor. The Rev. Mr. Melcher ac
companied his parents back home,
remaining with them here until
Tuesday.
Arriving Wednesday to spend
several weeks with Mrs. Edward
C. Conlin was Mrs. J. H. B. Reb-
ham of Garden City, Long Island,
N. Y.
Returning to their home here
Wednesday after a week’s vaca
tion in Nassau, B.W.I., were Mr.
and Mrs. J. Ellis Fields, Jr. Their
three daughters viaited Mr. and
Mrs. Ellis Fields, Sr. during their
parents’ absence.

winning both with a 6-1 score.
In second round play, Joann
was defeated 6-3 by Diane Innes.
According to tournament direc
tor Joe Roddey, play in the fall
tournament will probably con
tinue through this month on the
clay courts at the Pinehurst
Country Club, as most games are
scheduled on weekends.

achieved the first Academic

Waynesville, Va.
Cadet Stevens, son of Mrs. S.
T. Stevens of Pinehurst, is in his
sophomore year at Fishburne
School.

Andrews. PTA Speaker
Dr. John Daughtry, who heads
the Education Department of St.
Andrews College, will be the
speaker Tuesday at the monthly
meeting of the Pinehurst Parent-
Teacher Association.
The meeting will be held at 8
p. m. in the School Auditorium.

Sixty Pinehurst Country Club
members played' last Wednesday
in the season’s first tournament
for men, with the winning four
some comprising Joel C. Hufford,
David P. MacHarg, A Parker Hall
and Raymond E. North, who scor
ed 30-32-62.
Tied with 63’s for second place
were Arthur Long, J. P. Stapchin-
skas, Daniel O. Delany and Col
lier W. Baird, 31-32; and Alfred
N. Derouin Dennis C. Crotty,
Woody Browning and Dr. S. Carl
Sandzen, 32-31.
Women Players
In a stroke play tournament for
the best ball of all four partners,
played Friday by 58 women
members of the country club, first
prize winners were Mrs. William
C. Harris; Mrs. D. P. MacHarg,
Mrs. Michael T. Pishko and Mrs.
Karl F. Scheldt, with a score of
31-33-64.
Three teams tieing at 66 for

Memorial Fund
Set Up By Lions
' The Gordon Cameron Memorial
Educational Fund has just been
established by the Pinehurst
Lions Club.
The $250 annual fund will be
used to help Pinehurst students to
further their education.
This type of memorial is the
first to be set up in this way,
though the Lions Club has estab-
hshedi several memorials, in the
form of trophies whih are pre
sented yearly to students out
standing in some particular field.
Gordon Cameron, who died
August 5, was an official of Pine
hurst, Inc. for many years and
served 25 years on the Moore
County board of commissioners,
most of that time as chairman.
