CHARLES CAMERON , Jess Pickett" “Jess Pickett,” 22-month-old foxhound, with his master, Cal vin Blue, of Route 3, Carthage, made front page news in local and state newspaper recently when he was a fourth place win ner of the Grand National Field Trials held in Camden, S. C.. No- veniber 14-16. Last week, he completed in the United States Open Field Trial held at Durante, Miss., where he held third position at the end of ..le u.ira aay; going to first place position in the final day, and holding that position imtil one hour and five minutes before the end, when he was disqualified ! for “loafing.” Having him lose so near a Na tional victory is hard to accept, but Mr. Blue is still a proud mas ter and praises “Jess’s” fine per formances which put him into top position. Others attending from Moore County in addition to Blue, were Louis Garner, Tommy Richardson i^ave i'lison. Circles Meet Both Circles of the WSCS met last week in the church fellow ship hall for their December me.2tings 'with Christmals p(i|o-i grams on “If "We Had Been in Bethlehem.” A social hour, with rerreshments, followed each meeting. Twelve members and on.3 guest, Mrs. Murray of Wilson, a sister of Mrs. E. L. Finch, were present. Circle 1 met on Tuesday night with Mrs. J. M. Davis as hostess. Mrs. Charles Gschwind, chair man, presided. Miss Ethel Davis led ;the program. Miss Bessie Cameron, Mrs. C. P. McMillan and Mrs. A. G. Edwards, Sr. as sisted with related topics. Mrs. K. R. Thomas presented the Bible study. Circle 2 met with Mrs. Howard Callahan on Thursday night. Mrs. Charles Cameron presided. Mrs. Lewis Frye was program leader, assisted by Mrs. James Hudson and Mrs. James Key. Mrs. Edd Callahan was welcomed as a guest and as a new member of the Society. During the business sessions, plans for Christmas cheer were completed. Covered Dish Supper The Vass Woman’s Club will meet Friday night, December 13, at 7:30 p. m. at the local school, in the Home Economics room, for their regular annual covered dish Christmas supper. Each member may bring a guest, and is asked to taring a suitable gift for an ex change of Christmas gifts. Decoraling Contest The Vass Woman’s Club is sponsoring a home Christmas decorating contest in Vass this year. All who cane to enter the contest are invited to d‘o so. En trants are asked to give their names to Mrs. W. J. Morgan or Mrs. A. G. Edwards, Jr., so that the list can be compiled for the judges. First prizes in cash will be given for outdoor and indoor decorating. The judging will take place on Monday night, Decem ber 23. Guest Speaker The Rev. C. Freeman Heath, conference director of the Board of Evangelism, was guest speaker the Vass Methodist Church during tbs Sunday School, morn ing worship hour, and in an after noon session Sunday afternoon. Ladies' Night The Vass Lion’s club observed Ladies’ Night at their December meeting last Tuesday night with their annual turkey supper and Christmas party in the Cypress Church educational buHding. John Alec Smith was master of ceremonies, C. L. Tyson welcom ed the ladies and Mrs. Ray Grif fin gave the response. The Rev. J. D. Hales gave the invocation. Each lady was remembered with a gift. During the evening, a Christ mas Greeting was read, which is to be sent to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ray Pope and family of Honolula, Hawaii, from the Lions and their wives. Mr. Pope, a member of the Club, was joined by Mrs. Pope and children in Hawaii recently. The supper was served by the women of the church. On TV Show Two local women, Mrs. Charles Gschwind and Mrs. Clay ton Evans, appeared Thursday afternoon on the Peggy Mann Television Show at Durham. On November 26, Mrs. John Baker of the Cypress community; Mrs. Robert Coffey of Route 1, Cam eron,; Mrs. M. M. Routh also of Cameron, and Mrs. Poole of Jack- son Springs, accompanied the Moore County Home Demonstra tion agent, Mrs. Jean Hubbard, to Durham, and represented their local Clubs with handmade Christmas items as guests on the TV Show. Church Programs Sunday, December 15, at 7:30 a candle lighting program and the “Joy Gift” offering will ibe received at the Presbyterian Church. “The Star That Shineth In Darkness” will be presented at the Baptist Church Friday night, December 20. Lt. Ralph Anderson is the program director. On Sunday night, December 22, at 7:30 p. m. in a candle lighting service will be presented at the iMethodist church. Personals Mrs. Betty Cameron and Miss Jennie Cameron have returned to their home on Route 1, Cameron, after a 10-day visit with their niece and her husband, Mr. and Mrs Arthur Reid, of West Bridge- .■a':er. Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Arch Blue and son, J. D. Blue, spent from Wed nesday until Friday of last week in Mount Airy, visiting in the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Curt Blue, Mr. and Mrs. Hulah Blue and with other relatives. Local boys who were among the November draftees into the Army and who are all presently stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga., are Billy Bob Blake, Joe Frye, Frank Stewart, and Cliff Blue, Jr. of Aberdeen. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Cooper of Hamlet and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Clayton and children of Aber deen. v'rited Mrs. M. B. Clayton and Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Evans Srturday. * Mr. and Mrs. Albert Cameron and daughter. Miss Janice Cam eron, and Mr. and. Mrs. James McKay and daughter were Sun day afternoon visitors here with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cameron and daughter. Mrs. Bob Perry of Wake For est was a Saturday visitor with an aunt, Miss Bessie Cameron, and visited with her mother, Mrs. Mamie Keith, at St. Joseph’s Hos pital. Vass Senior Girl Scouts visited the new State House and Art Gallery in Raleigh Friday after noon. ,Scouts making the trip were Carol Parker, Holly Hales, Ann Crockett, Mary Cameron, accompanied by their leaders, Mrs. Ralph Anderson and Mrs. Russell Tate. The Rev. and Mrs. David Moe and children, Beverly and Bill re turned to their home here early Saturday, after a few days spent in Bernhard’s Bay, N. Y., where the Rev. Mr. Moe participated in funeral services last Tuesday for Harlan Webb, a friend and a member of the church where the Rev. Mr. Moe was pastor for seven years. Mrs. Mary Howell entered St. Joseph’s Hospital last Monday for treatm.ant.
