He asked Tar Heel farmers to help him find the fattest and fan ciest turkey in North Carolina. The heavyweight champion tur key will strut North Carolina’s colors in the National Turkey Show in Louisville, Ky., January 6-10. Governor Sanford issued the invitation to Tar Heel turkey growers after accepting a chal lenge from former Governor Bert Combs of Kentucky to enter a Tar Heel turkey in the national competition. Noting that North Carolina farmers had raised 2,737,000 tur keys this year, Governor Sanford said: “We know that Tar Heel tur keys are the tastiest in the na tion. "We also know that they gob ble as fine a tune as turkeys any where. “And we suspect that they will weigh in with the best in the country.’’ The Governor pointed out that North Carolina ranks 12th in the nation in total turkey production. State and federal agricultural rec ords show the 1963 turkey pro duction is up about 17 per cent. ’The Governor asked turkey growers to write the vital statis tics of their nominations to Wade Lucas, public information officer. One of the key purposes of a farm conservation plan is to or ganize farming operations in a systematic manner, “one step at a time,” as indicated by the Mc Pherson plan.
