Governor Seeks
Heaviest Turkey
For Show Entry
Governor Terry Sanford talked
turkey yesterday.
He asked Tar Heel farmers to
help him find the fattest and fan
ciest turkey in North Carolina.
The heavyweight champion tur
key will strut North Carolina’s
colors in the National Turkey
Show in Louisville, Ky., January
6-10.
Governor Sanford issued the
invitation to Tar Heel turkey
growers after accepting a chal
lenge from former Governor
Bert Combs of Kentucky to enter
a Tar Heel turkey in the national
competition.
Noting that North Carolina
farmers had raised 2,737,000 tur
keys this year, Governor Sanford
said:
“We know that Tar Heel tur
keys are the tastiest in the na
tion.
"We also know that they gob
ble as fine a tune as turkeys any
where.
“And we suspect that they
will weigh in with the best in the
country.’’
The Governor pointed out that
North Carolina ranks 12th in the
nation in total turkey production.
State and federal agricultural rec
ords show the 1963 turkey pro
duction is up about 17 per cent.
’The Governor asked turkey
growers to write the vital statis
tics of their nominations to Wade
Lucas, public information officer.
State Department of Conserva
tion and Development, Raleigh.
’The written nominations should
include: Weight, breed, sex and
age of turkey.
Arrangements will be made to
send the champion to Louisville.
plan was made recently by John
Baker, Route 1, Cameron, who
plans to renovate all of his pas
ture, using coastal bermuda grass
on his sandy upland fields with a
strip of Bahia grass between the
bermuda and the cropland. ’The
fields in the creek bottom will
go to fescue and ladino clover.
Luther McPherson, Rou^e 1,
Cameron, also made a conserva
tion plan, the key feature of
which is the establishment of
grass in crop rotation followed
two years later with a grass
waterway in a natural depression
which will serve as the outlet for
two parallel terraces.
One of the key purposes of a
farm conservation plan is to or
ganize farming operations in a
systematic manner, “one step at
a time,” as indicated by the Mc
Pherson plan.
