AT HOME HERE FOR HOLIDAYS Maj jor Becker, Retired From Service In Army, Now Teaching In Baltimore ■ ■m. mm MAJOR ROBERT J. BECKER After retiring from the U. S. Army, with more than 20 years of service. Major Robert J. Beck er of 355 E. Vermont Ave., is teaching in the Baltimore (Md.) city schools. His formal retire ment took place at Fort Hola- bird, Md., on November 30. While at home here for the Christmas holidays, he said that he hopes to obtain a teaching po sition in this area for the 1964- 65 school year, enabling him to return here and be with his fam- ily. Major Becker’s wife is the for mer Frances Shaw, and they have two children, Kay, 14, and Robert, 3. Mrs. Becker is the own er and operator of the Frandel Beauty Shop here. The family is remaining in Southern Pines while Major Becker continues with his teaching in Baltimore. Serving as an officer throughout all but three years of his career, Major Becker entered' the Army in 1941 In Cleveland, Ohio. In 1944 he was commissioned a sec ond lieutenant at Fort Custer, Mich. Major Becker saw action with the 25th Infantry Division at Guadalcanal, and with the 65th Infantry Division in Europe. He was the first American soldier in the town of Regensburg, Ger many. He went to Fort Holabird from an assignment in France in 1956, and after attending the Intelli gence School was assigned as Dep uty Chief of Aerial Reconnais sance Committee. The most memorable event in his Army career was the Berlin Airlift, Major Becker said. “I was amazed at the morale, and the hardships the German Lt. J. D. Eifort Completes Army Tour In Germany First Lt. Joseph D. Eifort, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald D. Efort of West End, was released Jan uary 1 from active duty with the U. S. Army in Europe on comple tion of a two-year tour of duty. He was stationed with the 3rd Armored (Spearhead) Division at Kyers Kaserne, Kirch Goens, Germany, and will stay in Europe for several months, traveling and studying, before returning home next summer. The 24-year-old officer, who is unmarried, graduated in 1957 from West End High school and from Davidson college in 1961, entering the Army in November of that year.
