County Recorder’s Court, Carthage
A full after-holiday docket kept
Moore County Recorder’s Court,
with Judge J. Vance Rowe pre
siding, in session until late after
noon Monday, as the regular
weekly session of the court was
held.
Here is a summary of the cases
heard:
Elbert- L. Sullivan, Carthage,
speeding 54 in 35 zone, $15 and
costs; Larry C. Smith, Carthage,
exceeding safe speed, accident
and property damage, $25 and
costs; Morrison Cooley Brady,
Liberty, careless and reckless
driving, accident ■ with personal
injury, judgment continued on
payment of $50 fine and costs and
payment of medical expenses of
person injured in accident, not to
drive in a careless and reckless
manner during 12 months nor
when defendant has had any
amount of an intoxicating bev
erage; John Oliver Darnell, Star
Route, Carthage, exceeding safe
speed, accident resulting in
property damage, judgment con
tinued on payment of $15 fine
and costs and pay damage to car,
defendant required to file a state
ment showing repairsi to car have
been made.
James Rush Tucker, Route 7,
Sanford, careless and reckless
driving, judgment continued for
12 months on payment of $35 fine
and costs, not to operate a motor
vehicle while he has any amount
of an intoxicating -beverage of any
kind, with seal broken, in the
vehicle; Henry Me A. Burwell,
Pinehurst, hunting without li
cense, case continued to Satur
day, January 18; Arnold L. Co
mer, Route 2, Robbins, exceeding
safe speed, accident, $10 and
costs; Gerry McN. Coggin, San
ford, speeding 65 in 55 zone, un
lawful possession of illicit whis
key, $10 and costs; Benny Clark
Williamson, Route 2, Robbins,
drunken driving, 60 days on roads,
suspended on payment of $100
fine and costs, driver’s license to
be revoked for 12 months.
Walter Lee Stinnette, Carthage,
drunken driving, resisting arrest,
90 days on the roads, suspended
for 12 months on payment of $150
fine and costs, not to operate a
motor vehicle while under the in
fluence, nor to violate law against
assault and battery, during that
time, operator’s license to be re
voked for 12 months, the clerk di
rected to pay for a new coat for
the police officer out of the fine;
Raymond Ritter, Pinehurst, as
sault and battery on female, judg
ment continued for 12 months on
payment of costs and on condi
tion of good behavior to family
and that he not take liquor to his
home or come home intoxicated
during the 12 months; Junior I.
Flinchum, Route 3, Carthage, ex
ceeding safe speed, not guilty,
failure to report accident, $15 and
costs.
Sammie Lee, Carthage, disturb
ing peace, carrying concealed
weapon, not guilty (the sheriff di
rected to destroy the weapon,
with consent of defendant);
George Clinton McNeill, Carth
age, drunken driving, plea of
guilty of careless and reckless
driving accepted, $25 and costs;
Gloria Dawn Davis, Norwich, N.
Y., driving without operator’s li
cense, failure to grant right of
way, resulting in accident, found
not guilty of failure to grant right
of way, as to driving without li
cense, judgment continued on
payment of costs (the court
found the defendant had been liv
ing in this state two and a half
months and, in view of other cir
cumstances, was, for the purpose
of the law, a resident of this state
at the time of arrest).
Ervin Richardson, Eagle
Springs, disposing of mortgaged
property, nol pros with leave, re
fusing to surrender license to
proper officer, 60 days oh roads,
suspended on payment of $10
fine and costs; Charles E. Burke,
Route 2, Sanford, attempt to com
mit arson, assault and battery on
wife, nol pros on payment of
costs by prosecuting witness ((his
wife); Walter B. Cole, Jr., Car
thage, speeding 48 in 35 zone, $10
and costs; Franklin D. Hughes,
Route 1, Robbins, non-support
of wife and child, abandonment,
found guilty only of non-support
of child, 90 days on the roads,
suspended on payment of the
costs and payment of $80 to
Vivian S. Hughes, his wife, to
cover back payments under a
separation agreement and then,
beginning January 7, to pay $15
per week toward support of their
six-year-old daughter.
Locke McMillan, Taylortowh,
Pinehurst, abandonment and non
support, nol pros with leave on
recommendation of solicitor. Cash
bonds in speeding cases were for
feited, as posted by Lester B.
Wallace, Sr., John Thompson
Merrill, Leland P- Bradford and
Martha Adcox Bullard; David
Ray Goodwin, speeding 65 in 55
zone, $10 and costs.

Birthday Party
Miss Beth Buffkin, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Buffkin, cele
brated her seventh birthday at
a movie party Saturday after
noon. She was joined by her
guests for the delightful movie,
“Sword in the Stone.” Following
the movie, the party continued
in the Patio Room at Howard
* Johnson’s where the group en
joyed seeing Beth open her gifts.
Each guest made his own
choice of ice cream and enjoyed
birthday cake. Suckers and bal
loons were given as favors.
Guests included: Beth Blue,

Miss Alice Pohl of Raleigh was
dinner guest of Mrs. David Bailey
Wednesday evening. Miss Pohl is
a former resident of Aberdeen
and has just returned from a
three and a half-months’ trip to
Europe.
Miss Marion Doub has returned
to California following the holi
days with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. H. W. Doub.
Charles Merrill spent a few
days last week with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Merrill.
Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Lockey,
Jr. and son have returned to 5T.
Knox, Ky., following the holiday
visit with Mr. and Mrs. Forrest
Lockey.
Mrs. W. C. Johnston of Moores-
ville spent the weekend with her
mother, Mrs. D. H. Reed. Joining
them for Sunday were Mr. and
Mrs. Elwood Reed of Badin and
Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Johnston and
family of Liberty.
Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Gaillard
and son, Robert Bruce, of Char
lotte spent a long weekend with
their parents, Mr. and Mrs. James
Gaillard and Mr. and Mrs. James
Veasey.
Miss Martha Jo Robbins return
ed Sunday to Pineland College
where she is a member of the
Junior Class, High School Divi
sion, there. She has spent the past
three weeks at her home here.

end at the coast.

Raleigh spent a part of the holi
days with her parents, Mr. and
