Cole of Garth-1 County did a wonderful job in age, director of Moore County Department of Public Welfare, said this week that her agency needs clothing and furniture for low-income families during the Winter and school months. Especially needed are shoes for children who are attending school. If there is any individual or or ganization who would like to give to the Public School Shoe Fund, donations would be most appreciated and will be used to help keep children attending school regularly Mrs. Cole said. Contributions should be sent to Moore County Department of Public Welfare. Carthage. Several families in the county have been burned out and are still in need of household furnishings, it was stated. Also as case work ers visit homes they see the need for furnishings that are essential such as cooking utensils, dishes, chairs or, an extra bed. “We have storage space in Car thage and will pick up any furnishings you may have that you are not using,” Mrs. Cole said. “Each community in Moore I remembering children and aged and lonely persons at Christmas time. Our agency is most appreci ative of your cooperation, especi ally the work done by the Christ mas Cheer committees. “The Shoe Fund and used cloth ing and used firrniture contribu tions can make it possible for you to provide Christmas in a small but important way all d'ur- ing the year.” Can Take Tax Refunds In U. S. Savings Bonds Taxpayers are reminded' that they can take Federal tax refunds in U. S. Savings Bonds. Taxpayers due Federal Income Tax refunds can take them in Series E Savings Bonds, cash, or apply the refund to next year’s tax. The individual income tax forms — 1040 and 1040A — pro vide a space in which taxpayers may elect U. S. Savings Bonds for their refunds. Information on the option also appears in the instructions for both of these forms. Children's Home Group Thanks Contributors A successful December fund raising campaign has been report ed by the Children’s Home Socie ty of North Carolina, with offices in Greensboro, Charlotte and Ra leigh. Just over $66,000 was received in answer to the Society’s tradi tional Christmas season appeal, said William D. Snider of Greens boro, Society president. “We want to say ‘Thank you’ to the many North Carolinians who responded to our appeal,” he said. HERBERT HORN Works by Bartok, Schumann, Beethoven and Brahms will be played by Herbert Horn in his first faculty piano recital at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Laurinburg, on Friday evening, January 31. Dr. Horn’s program begins at 3 p.m. in the Liberal Arts Audi torium on campus, and is open to the public. Head of the piano department at the St. Andrews Conservatory of Music since September, Dr. Horn came to North Carolina from California and Hawaii. He completed his work for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Southern California recently. His parents, the Rev. and Mrs. A. L. Horn live here, at 510 W. Maine Ave. While he was associate profes sor of piano at the University of Hawaii, Dr. Horn was selected by the National Guild of Piano Teachers to make a concert tour of the Islands. At the 1963 state convention of the California Music Teachers As sociation, he gave an all Bartok recital. 'This reflects his work in recent years through the study and performance of Bela Bartok’s piano music. Ten pieces from the 153 which make up Bartok’s “Mikrokosmos” are included as a section of the January 31 recital.
