I T THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1964 THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina Mrs. Barringer, Sister Of Local Resident, Dies Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Kiser Barringer, Jr., 47, of Win ston-Salem, were held at Win ston-Salem Wednesday of last week. She died Saturday of the previous week in Torrance, Calif. She was born in Moore County, daughter of Ollie and Atta Kiser, and spent her early life in Moore. She moved' to Winston-Salem while she was still young. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Brenda Morefield of Durham and Miss Patricia Barringer of the home; two sons, Jerry and Danny Barringer of the home; a brother, T. S. Kiser of Greensboro; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Moore of Win ston-Salem, Mrs. Mattie Jones of Spray, and Mrs. Carrie Hall of Southern Pines; also several half- sisters and half-brothers. Mrs. Sam Swearingen presided in the absence of the president, Mrs. R. S. Gwyn. Miss Prances Pleasants made an interesting talk on “Pyramids of Egypt.” During the meeting the club members revealed their “Hearty- Dart.” At the January meeting they each drew the name of a member of the club and during the past month had done “special” things for their “Hearty-Dart” to lend enchantment to the Valen tine season. Delicious refreshments were served from an attractively deco rated table using the Valentine motif. The 14 members and three guests enjoyed strawberry sun daes, Valentine cookies, candy hearts, cake and coffee. Guests included Miss Pleasants; Mrs. C. C. Pleasants presided over the busi ness session. The group voted to make a donation to the Heart Fund. Mrs. J. C. Robbins was in charge of the program and spoke on “Literature of Today” with comments on the best sellers. She gave special mention to “Tracks in the Sky” by Page Shambur- ger of Aberdeen. Refreshments of sandwiches, cookies, and russian tea were en joyed during the social hour. Cub Scouts Cub Den 4, with Mrs. Jack Tribble serving as Den Mother, enjoyed a trip to the Ringling Bros. Circus in Raleigh Friday afternoon. Accompanying the group were Mr. and Mrs. Tribble and Floyd Dunn. Excited scouts taking part in the outing were Paul Peacock, Alvin Garner, Jackie Yow, Gary Yow, Henry Tribble, Mike Dunn, Chris Wick er, and Alex McCaskill, Demolays The following Demolays at tended a state-wide Demolay meeting in Raleigh Sunday: Vic tor Grose, Bob Matthews, Dickie Walters, Jimmy Dowless, Jimmy Garner, Jimmy Bobbit, Tommy Thompson, Bill Dickenson, and Mac Lathan. Jimmy Dowless is serving as state preceptor. Bridge-Luncheon Mrs Bob Farrell was hostess to members of her bridge club at a luncheon and bridge Tuesday. At the end of play, Mrs. Dan Farrell was declared high scorer and Mrs. George Anderson, second high. Others playing included Mrs. Ralph Leach, Jr., Mrs. Lawrence McN. Johnson, Mrs. David Hobbs, Mrs. N. A. Pleasants, Mrs. C. D. McGowan, and Mrs. Sid Taylor. Home and Garden Club Mrs. C. G. Farrell and Mrs. Jim McKeithen were co-hostesses to the Garden Club on Tuesday at the American Legion Hut. Mrs. Sam Swearingen president, presi ded over the meeting. Mrs. Ralph Caldwell, program hairman of the afternoon, pre sented Miss Lunette Barber, of Raleigh, who is with the N. C. Dept, of Conservation. She gave an interesting talk and showed lovely slides of Birds and wild flowers of N. C. Party sandwiches, cake and russian tea were served the 26 present, including guests, Mrs. Knox Matthews, and Mrs. J. Vance Rowe. Briefs Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Robbins at tended a business meeting in Charlotte a few days this week. Mr. and Mrs. Wimberly Bow man of Fayetteville spent the weekend with relatives here. Mrs. Harold Rasmussen and Mrs. R. L. Jorgensen left Monday for a trip to Florida. Mrs. Jack Taylor recently re turned from Florida after visiting her son and family. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Honeycutt of Fayetteville spent Saturday and Sunday with Mrs. Knox Mat thews. Jack Tribble spent the weekend in Atlanta, Ga. with his mother. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Davis left Monday to spend a few days in Hillsboro and Charlottesville, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Smith of Rocky Mount visited friends and relatives here Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sands and Rhonda visited relatives in Greensboro Sunday. Mrs. J. W. Johnson of Fayette ville visited the Victor Groses Sunday. E. Reed of Winston-Salem, became the bride pf Ai2c Thaddeous Nelson Frye, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thaddeous Frye of Carthage. The bride will graduate from Woman’s College in June. The bridegroom is home on leave from an air base in Madrid, Spain, where he has been on a tour of duty for a year. The young air man will return to Spain when his 20-day leave expires The bride will fly to Madrid to be with her husband after her graduation. Airman Frye is a graduate of the University of North Carolina. Only relatives attended the wedding with the exception of the maid of honor, a college friend of the bride’s, and Hugh McCas kill, a friend of the bridegroom. Personals “Rudy” Womack is improving in Duke Hospital after having surgery last week. Mrs. Ruby Spencer is very ill at her home here. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Jones and children of Bennett, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John R. Kelly, on Sunday afternoon. Solicitor and Mrs. M. G. Boy ette spent this weekend with their daughter, Mrs. Y. H. Allen and Mr. Allen and daughters, in Lum- berton. Mrs. Guy Bangos and her little son are home from Moore Me- mforial Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Pleasants of Southern Pines visited their aunt, Mrs. Frank S. Blue, on Fri day, Valentine’s Day. John R. Kelly, Jr. of Durham spent this weekend with his par ents and was guest soloist at the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Ruth MacLeod, who has been ill is somewhat better. Mrs. Sadie Marie Maltby and son Billy of Washington, D. C. is visiting her parents, Mr. andMrs. Thad Frye and attended the wed ding of her brother Nelson Frye, on Valentine’s Day in Greens boro. Julian Pleasants of Fort Bragg and Southern Pines visited his great aunt, Mrs. Frank S. Blue, on Thursday. Miss Kay Patterson of East Carohna College in Greensville visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Patterson. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kennedy and children of Upper Saddle River, N. J., en route to Florida for a vacation, spent this week end with her sister, Mrs. W. H. Currie and Mr. Currie at their home here. ABC Officer’s Hunch Pays Off: 10 Jars Whiskey y ABC Officer Edward Floyd of Aberdeen stopped a car on a hunch last Friday about dusk, and the hunch paid off. In the trunk of the car he found 10 half gallon jars of white whis key. ■The driver, Charlie Gibson, Ne gro, 37, of Hoffman Rt. 1 was ar- ersted and placed under $100 bond by a JP, to appear in Moore Recorder’s Court March 2 on charges of unlawful possession of illicit whiskey for sale, and trans porting. His 1957 Buick was im pounded and placed in storage. Floyd said he wasn’t sure just why he stopped Gibson—^he had stopped him before, and never found anything in his car. This time, though, the officer said he wasn’t surprised by what he found—only “surprised that there wasn’t more.” The search and arrest took place on US Highway 1 in the Drowning Creek area, just after Gibson had crossed the line from Richmond County into Moore. Foreign Language Speakers Sought Mrs. Raymond Cameron, ad ministrative secretary at the town’s Information Center, said this week that she has been asked by the State Department of Pub lic Instruction to compile a list of persons in this area who speak French, Spanish or German. She urged that anyone speaking these languages get in touch with her. She said the request was ap parently made with a view to en listing occasional volunteer serv ices by such persons in connec tion with public school language programs.
